unlike dmf2, even with the "do not convert mpg compliant files" checked, dmf3 wants to re-encode!!! I have a set of mpg files that when loaded into dmf2 with "do not convert" checked project file size fits on dvd-r. same exact project with dmf3 and do not convert checked makes project siz like 15gig!!! Any suggestions?

i went to uleads web support and forums and found nothing on dmf3 regarding this issue...

I have exactly the same problem, whenever you import video
whether its VIDEO_TS or DVD-RTAV the file sizes grow
almost 3x
Make the program completely useless, there must be an answer for
this.

same prob here, but if you output to make video/audio TS folder the resulting folder is the correct size so you can burn it with nero etc.ignore the size bar in the program, as long as you know the size of the file is ok.
this works for me.trying to get tech support is like trying to get blood out of a stone once they have your money!!!! -
tryied compiling to video-ts folder but says i need 26gig (roughly twice what it already inflated 4.38gig of files too!). i don't have 26gig NOR would i consider this option. ARE YOU SURE EVEN THOUGH YOU'RE GETTING RIGHT FILE SIZES WHEN CREATING VIDEO_TS THAT PROGRAM DIDN'T RE-ENCODE ALONG THE WAY!!!
dmf3 has some major bugs...sad considering latest updates for dmf2 made if very stable, just didn't have fancy motion menus. -
I am using MF3 right now, and I get the right size files, AFAIK.
I do not use MF3 to burn, so I made video_ts and audio_ts files, and they looked like the right size, and burned to DVD no problem.
I will try MF3 with "do not convert mpg compliant files" checked and unchecked to make sure, I want to make sure it is not re_encoding.
BTW, I did compare a build I did with MF3 to a build with dvd author, and they were too close to see a difference. Source was analog 8mm tapes, captured to mpg2 with an AIW card.

Re-encoding won't occur if you don't use the new *editing* features in Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3.0.
I've confirmed that no re-encoding occurs on the following three workstations:
Workstation #1
Asus A7N266 mainboard
NVIDIA nForce chipset
NVIDIA GeForce 2 integrated GPU
CMI8738/C3DX DirectAudio Device
ADS Pyro IEEE 1394 controller card
AMD Athlon XP2000+ (1.67ghz)
Windows XP Home Service Pack 1
1gb PC2100 DDR memory
Panasonic SW-9571 external DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD-RAM
Panasonic LF-D321 internal DVD-R/DVD-RAM
Workstation #2
Asus A7N8X mainboard
NVIDIA nForce 2 chipset
Asus V9180 video display PCI adapter
NVIDIA nForce Audio Codec Interface
Adaptec FireConnect 4300
AMD Athlon XP2400+ (2.0ghz)
Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
1gb PC2100 DDR memory
Panasonic LF-D311 DVD-R/DVD-RAM drive
Workstation #3 (mobile)
Toshiba 1955 S805 (laptop)
Pentium 4 2.5ghz processor
512mb memory
Integrated OHCI compliant IEEE 1394
Windows XP Home Service Pack 1
Toshiba SD-R6012 DVD-R/DVD-RW drive
I not only check the DO NOT CONVERT COMPLIANT FILES check box.
I also precisely match my Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3.0 project settings to precisely match the properties of my source video and the DVD burn advances immediately to the video/audio multiplexing - with no re-encoding of the source media.
I limit use of the new editing tools to DV .avi files, which have to be re-encoded to MPEG anyway.
Any use of the editing tools in Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3.0 will lead to re-encoding, unfortunately.
At least that is what I have observed in my testing.

In my tests of files 2gb in size (or less), the file sizes are reported accurately.
I'll do some more testing with greater than 3gb file sizes to see if I can reproduce this - now that your post has aroused my curiosity.

also, might be major factor that these mpg's were edited down in size my mpegvcr (cut out commercials), then re-encoded with mainconcept's mpeg encoder 1.4.1....just a thought. please advise...thanks, mike
p.s...loading a 367mb file (as shown in windows explorer or other programs, for instance) immediately shows total project size of 3 times that or so??? weird, glitchy stuff...but i want it figured out fast so can get money back if need be, and i want to start using motion menus!!! -
Ok I think I have the answer to one of the problems regarding file size's in MF3 (having just paid 4 this prog)
Using the trim feature on my copy of MF3 increasing the file size
I can reproduce this every time, simple by clicking the mark in position 5 sec into the clip (1h 3m long)) the status bar at the bottom goes from 3.84GB to 6.37GB reset mark in to the beginning and hey presto 3.84GB
Interestingly the time show remains the same.
Have yet to try deleting the 5 sec portion
regards

i think that's the deal with my files, but trimmed/edited with womble mpegvcr instead of trim tool in dmf3. end result is same as what you described. this never happened in dmf2...so guess we need update/patch solution from ulead.

While not specifically addressing the obvious technical glitches in MF3, I can say that I routinely feed 5 meg files through MF3 after I've edited them with Womble MPEG-VCR. Of course the size bar goes off the scale but I just ignore it and burn to disk (VIDEO_TS). I then feed it into DVD Shrink to make it fit (auto burns with Nero).
I just cut a piece out of a DVD compliant clip with MF3, checked no menus, do not convert compliant files, and it still re-rendered. Only took a few minutes but I don't see any reason for it. Womble seems to be able to cut and paste without re-rendering. MF3 is not a bad program if you don't use it for editing. Of course it's a little pricey for just a menu generator. -
THANKS YOU FOR THAT LAST POST...EXACTLY MY SENTIMENTS AND RESULTS, ETC. "YOU ARE CORRECT, SIR!"

As far as I can tell, the key questions have never been answered.
First, what are the precise video/audio properties of the source media;
Second, how are your PROJECT SETTINGS adjusted?
When I wish to NOT re-encode the source video and NOT use the editing tools, I click the PROJECT SETTINGS button, which is the second button in the lower left corner of the screen.
I just did the following test:
1. Open Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3.0;
2. I clicked the CREATE VIDEO DISC button;
3. After the CREATE VIDEO DISC pop-up menu appeared, I chose the NEW PROJECT and DVD options and I clicked the NEXT button;
4. I clicked the ADD VIDEO FILES button;
5. After the OPEN VIDEO FILE pop-up menu appeared, I browsed to the location of a Panasonic VDR-M30 DVD disc camcorder MPEG that I had recorded earlier.
The precise properties of this Panasonic MPEG-2 file are as follows:
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 704 x 480, 29.97 fps
Field Order B
(DVD-NTSC), 4 : 3
Video data rate: Variable (8800 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo
6. I highlighted the file I wished to IMPORT and I clicked the OPEN button;
7. Next (and this is the step everybody seems to miss) I click the PROJECT SETTINGS button;
8. After the PROJECT SETTINGS pop-up menu appears, I check the DO NOT CONVERT COMLIANT FILES check box *and* I click the CHANGE MPEG SETTINGS button;
9. After the small pop-up menu appears, I click CUSTOMIZE;
10. After the VIDEO SAVE OPTIONS pop-up menu appears, I click the GENERAL and COMPRESSION tabs and I adjust my PROJECT SETTINGS to precisely *match* the properties of the source media clips as follows:
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 704 x 480, 29.97 fps
Field Order B
(DVD-NTSC), 4 : 3
Video data rate: Variable (8800 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo
11. I click the OK button of the VIDEO SAVE OPTIONS pop-up menu to accept the new encode settings;
12. I click the OK button of the PROJECT SETTINGS pop-up menu to confirm the new encode settings.
(I observe *NO* inflated file size issue here on my workstation.)
Instead, I think you should try UN-checking the DO NOT CONVERT COMPLIANT FILES check box and then toggle back and forth between the various PROJECT SETTINGS templates to see how each template impacts the file size report at the bottom of the screen.
When I DE-SELECT the DO NOT CONVERT COMPLIANT FILES check box, I observe that as I toggle back and forth between my own CUSTOM encode settings and the standard template settings, the value at the bottom of the screen radically CHANGES (after I click the OK button to accept each new set of encode parameters) in response to my encode setting selections.
So when I read these problem reports, I am left to wonder about two missing informational items:
1. The precise video/audio properties of the source;
2. The precise PROJECT SETTINGS selected.

Also, What does the yellow area represent?
From the posts I have read people seem to be getting the opposite problem!

Well, here you go! Bitrate Viewer program gives the following details on my source. In addition, it's a tv tuner capture from cable tv using hauppauge wintv usb pvr2, "dvd standard play" template.
**every option previously mentioned with regards to "do not convert", video/audio settings and project settings all still result in over 3 times the project file size. Further, dmf2 has never had a problem with this source or any source I've used with respect to project file size. Ulead needs to get on this and get a patch released. Pretty lame indeed.
Stream type: MPEG-2 MP@ML VBR
Resolution: 720*480
Aspect ratio: 4:3 Generic
Framerate: 29.97
Nom. bitrate: 8000000 Bit/Sec
VBV buffer size: 112
Constrained param. flag: No
Chroma format: 4:2:0
DCT precision: 8
Pic. structure: Frame
Field topfirst: Yes
DCT type: Field
Quantscale: Linear
Scan type: ZigZag
Frame type: Interlaced
Scene change detection: NOT FOUND
Variable GOP pattern: NOT FOUND
Notes: -
Now this is odd because I use Hauppauge PVR2 USB using DVD standard Template as well!! Are you sure your not putting 8000000 in the bit rate box instead of 8000! (As it is Kbps!!!!)
-
Where are the *AUDIO* properties of your source clips?
By the way, I just tried a larger than 3gb MPEG-2 file with the following properties:
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 704 x 480, 29.97 fps
Field Order B
(DVD-NTSC), 4 : 3
Video data rate: Variable (8800 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo
File size was reported accurately by Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3.0.
The file also burned without any issues.
I clicked the SECOND button in the lower left corner of the Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3.0 interface.
After the PROJECT SETTINGS pop-up menu appeared, I then checked the DO NOT CONVERT COMPLIANT FILES check box.
I also clicked the CHANGE MPEG SETTINGS button.
After the pop-up appeared, I clicked CUSTOMIZE.
After the VIDEO SAVE OPTIONS pop-up menu appeared, I clicked the GENERAL and COMPRESSION tabs and adjusted my project settings to *match* the properties of my source video.
No issues.
I am unable to reproduce the issue you have described.
If you continue to have problems, I would suggest you contact Ulead's Los Angeles technical support team at the following number:
1 (310) 896-6391, Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm PST

i checked and just put 8000 for video bitrate, so that's fine.
**maybe it's something weird from when i used womble mpeg-vcr to edit out the commercials...possibly makes it have a weird mpg header or something?? i'll load up my wintv source video that has not been edited into dmf3 tonight and see if that accurately reports project size. thanks to all who have helped so far...much appreciated. i'm about ready to try tech support
