I've posted this problem before and am offering a follow up. I've been having trouble capturing vhs on my AIW 9800, I get an intermittent white line across the top 5 to %10 percent, this occurs in the preview window prior to the capturing process and doesn't show up if I have the VCR menu up. I've tried multiple VCR's, cable connections, tapes......and the macrovision hack (which I've read doesn't work with the newer cards). I'm also using the newest drivers and 8.9 MMC. I've also tried capturing with other programs including Ulead Mediastudio Pro, Studio 8 among others. This doesn't occur if I'm viewing live TV. I'm not trying to capture commercial tapes but home videos so Macrovision should not be a problem.

The tapes look fine when direcly connected from a VCR to a TV. I'm assuming since they look fine on a VCR to TV connection I should expect similar results from capturing without having to purchase a TBC or any other external corrective device, Is this too much to ask?

I am not the only one having this problem, I have seen it posted on numerous other boards including this one. The common thread is that they are all using newer ATI AIW cards. I even read a post where the poster had upgraded from a older ATI card without problems to a newer one and experienced problems similar to mine.

My conclusion is that it is the Macrovision detection is set too high and if your tape is not in perfect condition it will not work correctly.

Is there anyone using a newer ATI AIW card that is able to capture VHS without using a TBC or other corrective device? If so I would like to hear from you.

  2. I have a 9600 AIW back in the box because it too has had some capturing problems.

Call ATI and let them know.

I only have this happen with tapes and not live video like from cable or off air. I tried everything from cleaning heads to switching vcr's. Reinstalling windows xp and 2000 pro. Different MMC and WDM capture versions. I even switched 9600's at best buy to see if it was that board itself. Turns out to be an undocumented problem until I called. Their tech had never found anything like it on their database.

I doubt that it is undocumented. With the amount of people having the same trouble that I am I'm sure they are aware of the problem. I reported it myself a month or two ago and they directed me to one of there capture issue documents that was unrelated to my problem. I can't even find it now. If I see so many posts about the same problem here and on other boards why would it not be listed in there FAQ.

Here's another discussion board about the same problem: http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=005hln I personally like the solution with the axe.

There's others I have found too. So my question remains is there anyone thaty is able to capture VHS video on there AIW 9000 series card? And if so please tell me how you have it and your computer configured.

  4. Interesting thoughts on that forum.

I will get going on re-installing my 9600 AIW and try the macrovision hack. If it works I will let our viewers know ASAP.

I was thinking before I answered this post earlier, that maybe the macrovision had something to do with my problem but just shrugged it off to trusting ATi.

Bad judgements aside, this article made me rethink this position

Merely overscan. Don't worry about it.

It's not merely overscan. It is quite visible on the TV after you burn them to DVD. At times the entire video flashes, becomes brighter then darker. From what I have read all are similar to what happens when macrovision kicks in.

I see you are using an older ATI card. I believe one of the persons who reported this problem on another post I read somewhere else didn't experience this problem until upgrading to a newer one, the coomon thread that I have come across is newer ATI cards.

Again I want to stress the fact that these are home movies and play perfectly on a direct TV to VCR connection. Most have been in storage and have only been viewed a few times. Some probably not at all because the content is really not that interesting.
