  1. Does anybody know why when I use MTR on my Power Mac G4 it works much slower than my G4 laptop.

    Power Mac G4
    Hardware Overview:

    Machine Model: Power Mac G4
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.2)
    Number Of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed: 1.25 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 1.25 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.5.7f1

    PowerBook G4
    Hardware Overview:

    Machine Model: PowerBook G4 15"
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.1)
    Number Of CPU's: 1
    CPU Speed: 1 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 256 MB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.7.1f1

For a 6GB movie the Power Mac takes about 25 mins.
The PowerBook only takes about 10 mins.

And the strange thing is when using DVD2One it is the other way around, the PowerBook is much slower!
    What gives?
    Thanks for the help !!!

Do you perform your regular maintenance on
both machines? Daily Crons, Clean out Caches,
    etc?

Are there any other processes going on
while MTR is running on the G4?

Last, Have you launched Activity Monitor
( found in the Utilities folder) and watched
    the CPU usage progress count
as MTR was running on both machines?
What did it say? What were the varying
    degrees between the two?

    Post back...
The only notices I have seen are MTR running 20%
    faster on a Dual 2GHz G5,
versus my dual 1ghz G4, but that is expected.

Mmmm, I'm assuming that the PowerMac has the OEM Pioneer Superdrive, and the PowerBook has the OEM Panasonic Drive. Rip speed is almost entirely dependent on the Optical drive.....It's common knowledge that Pioneer cripples the read speed with Firmware.....Panasonic doesn't.

DVD2oneX on the other hand, reads from the HD and actually uses processor power. The Optical drive is not a factor. Hence, the machine with more processor power and faster HD excels. Nothing strange here.

  4. How do I get the Pioneer drive to read faster? In the Power Mac I have a
    Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105 &
    Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R1312
Or should I always have the DVD's read from the Toshiba?

ive noticed a similar thing between my laptop as well.

I have been told its because of the dual processors on the tower. Use develop tools "hardware" pannel of your system prefs to turn off one of the processors and you should see a marked increase in speed and in stability - my dual processor MTR actually crashes out on about every other rip.

Have not tried with the most recent 2.0.2 release, so hopefully the new one may have solved some of these probs

either way, its a HECK of a lot faster than the ol' dvdbackup

  6. Well I did a test ..... I used the Toshiba DVD-ROM and MTR. It ripped a 4.3G DVD in about 10 mins. Much faster than the Pioneer. So it looks like the slow speed is associated with the Pioneer drive.
    Thanks for the help.

There's faster firmware for your Pioneer drive here:
    http://www.macetvideo.com/flashpioneerosx/flashpioneerosx.html
It's towards the middle of the page, get the DVR-A05/DVR-105 one. It'll allow full speed rip and burn on more media, and it's region-free, so you can then change its region an unlimited number of times.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

Just double-click on the "PIONEER DVR-105 Updater" file, and then follow the instructions in the terminal.

It's coming . . . eventually. It'll be crippled until then, unless you want to install it in a PC and try using a beta hacked firmware...
