When ripping a DVD9 to my hard drive using latest version of Shrink task manager is reading 99% CPU useage. This is with absolutely no other programs running, even disabled Norton. Is this normal? Doesn't sound right to me but I am no computer guru so this is why I am asking. I have 512 PC3200 DDR memory chip and AMD Athlon 2400 XP processor, Windows XP Home OS, other specs are in my profile. Please let me know what you think. Thank you very much for your advice.

I was informed by a mod here that this is normal. DVD Shrink uses all your CPU to rip. Therefore, the faster speed of your CPU the faster you will rip. Theoretically.

Perfectly normal.
If you continue down the road of making DVD's from backing up dvd9 through to transfering home video to dvd you will find that it is very time consuming and CPU intensive. Programs such as TMPGenc and DVD Shrink will eat as much CPU as it can.
I would advise that you do as little on your pc as possible whilst working on DVD's. This will a) ensure the best quality outcome and b) speed things up a little. -
Thanks guys, very much appreciate the reply. Just started having a new/old problem with Shrink. I have tried backing up a DVD9 three times now and three times Shrink has froze up, stopped, and froze my computer. This continually happens, off and on, think I am going to give up on Shrink eventhough it may be a problem with my computer although I NEVER have a problem running any other program other than shrink.

encoding dvd's is very time consuming and intensive as far as cpu cycles go and the problems you are having could be caused by heat ... ? checked your cpu temp under full load such as when using shrink as better cooling might be neededIt appears that the CPU was operating so fast that it began to execute instructions before they arrived. This execution of future instructions created a small tear in space-time itself through which part of the cpu passed into a parallel universe -
stvn, thank you for the advice, how do I check my temperature while running shrink, then if I do find it running too hot what do I do, add more fans, how many, where do I position them inside the case? As you can tell I know absolutely nothing about the subject of heating/cooling. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciate. Thank you very much.

For system monitoring, I recommend either Motherboard Monitor or SysMetrix. Both monitor CPU temps as well as fan speeds and case temps. If you have a decent heatsink/fan combo with atleast 1 intake and outake fan, and you aren't Oc'ing your CPU super high, I seriously doubt you'll be able to "run it too hot". Fan placement is up to you, most people will tell you have the same number of intake fans/exhaust fans to keep maximum airflow. I have a Chieftec Dragon tower, and I have 2 intake (front and side) and 2 exhaust (double rear). I also have a slot to add another intake in the front, and i was thinking about adding a 120mm blowhole on the top of case, just for good measure since I actually do have my CPU Oc'd. My PS also has dual fans, intake and exhaust, and that, being at the top of tower, sucks alot of hottest air out.

Thunder in Paradise thank you for the reply. Sounds like I am probably gonna have to get new case to accomodate all the fans needed. Right now I have 2 intake, 1 exhaust, My Antec 400w power supply seems to have plenty of connections for more fans. My current case is plenty large enough for more fans but I do not see any predrilled holes for addtional fans, hence probably need new case. Thank you for the advice.
