  1. Using ffmpegX, I get a lot of sync issues when going from avi to anything else. Would converting to mov files via Divx Dr help, or am I just going about it wrongly? I can convert MPEG1 to MPEG2, SVCD, etc, just fine, but put an avi in ffmpegX, and sync goes straight to hell!
Next, I know avi is a wrapper for various codecs, etc, IS THERE an app that will tell me what it is I've got inside my avi files?
If not, can some whiz programmer type build one? it'd be mighty helpful.

Both Quicktime and VLC have the ability to tell you what codec is being used by the AVI file. QT, while nicer (IMO, obviously) doesn't handle a large variaty of divx and other weird codecs, and often has a little difficulty telling you what kind they are. To use QT to find out the codec, open the file and hit Command-I. A little window will open that will tell you a bunch of things about the file. One of the categories is 'Format'. Check to see what it says. For example, the file I just opened says MPEG1 Muxed, 320x240. This indicates that it is a VCD. Your file might say
    Format: 'DX50'
Which means that it is a DivX file of some type, or so I am told. I need to leave now, so I'll deal with VLC later. Or maybe you need to use MPlayer. I forget.
If it isn't broken, take it apart and find out why.
