Okay, there is a similar question below, but I need to ask too. What is MP2? I am very new to all of this MPEG stuff, but is MP2 the standard extension for MPEG2? Do I need to convert it? Since when I tried burning a SuperVideo with Nero, I had no luck, but I can do a standard VCD w/o a problem. Nero says that it should be converted, and I need to purchase a plugin to do so. Is there anyway to convert it w/o this plugin? Like some freeware/shareware out there? Or should I be okay with the MP2 extension. Thanks in advance
Steve

It's like .mp3 only one step earlier. Before .mp3s got big people used .mp2. They weren't as popular but I've got a few files sitting on my drive in .mp2 format which I've never been able to find as .mp3s. Damned EZCD creator won't let me put 'em on a CD
I think it stands for MPEG-1 layer 2 as I believe .mp3 is MPEG-1 layer 3. Not sure what sort of software exists to encode it although you can always just use TMPGEnc and do audio only and that saves as .mp2. You can modify the bit rate too. I'm sure there's better software for it out there. Haven't poked around that much.

No, my video card records MPEG into the MP2 extension, yet Nero doesn't reconize (sp) it as a MPEG2 file, is the MP2 extension THE extension for MPEG2 files? If not, how do I change it so that NERO will read it okay? I have the Radeon AIW Video Card as the person does posting in a previous message?

Apart from the above and tooLame, most of the common MPEG-1 encoding software will encode to MPEG-1 Layer2 audio (e.g., TMPGEnc, Panasonic MPEG Encoder, LSX, Xing, etc.)
These files can be played by Winamp and any other MP3 decoder. Thus, you can also use Winamp's disk writting utility to decode the MP2 into a WAV file.

ATI saves all of its mpeg2 captures with the mp2 extension. It's not proprietary in any way. Simply try changing the extension to mpeg.
edit-
Depending on the bit rate you are using you may be better off capturing in mpeg1 as opposed to mpeg2. I have better luck with mpeg1 captures as opposed to mpeg2.

Seems needlessly confusing. I guess ATI has no respect for the .mp2 audio format.

The suposition is that ATI did not want to make it too easy to capture in a digital format (mpeg2 specifically) from a copyright perspective. I have heard some say it was a compromise. Simply save an mpeg2 file with a unique extension (mp2) and the powers that be would be placated - Hollywood. The "Steven's" of the world. As in a dream if you get what I mean
Well the world moves forward every day and it looks pretty stupid now. ATI tries to make it really tough - and to the average Joe it is. But there's alot of hidden advantages that make it worthwhile. I love the ability to turn on the "constrained parameter flag" in real time Mpeg1 captures. Maybe a bit of "fu" from the guys on the inside.

By the way Hollywood is really really nervous about all of this digital stuff. But if it takes 20 hours to process a 1 hour capture then everybody stays happy. It called a delay tactic. MP3 freaked them. But really I think video is alot different. Who in their right mind is going to watch a movie over and over again. Music yes. But video? Somebody has got to take the shakles off eventually. Although Blockbuster wants to see you back I guess. And all of this residual stuff has everybody goosed.
