  1. Anyone able to recommend a newbie a good MPEG to AVI conversion program/tool? I tried VirtualDub-MPEG2 v1.5.10 after it came up on doing a search at this site for such a comnversion. I followed the guide entirely using DivX v5 codec (as recommended) and the end product wasn't that great, I had lost a fair bit of picture quality, it went grainy.

Anyone recommend a high quality program which can minimize the loss of picture quality?

The loss of quality is due to the settings of the codec you use, not the encoderprogram (vdubmpeg2). Try to raise the bitrate or lower the resolution. Make sure you use at least 2 passes.

  3. When you say MPEG -> AVI do you really mean DVD -> DivX (it sounds like it). If so you might want to check out Gordian Knot (http://www.doom9.org). It's a collection of programs with a frontend program to will set everything up for you, then you just hit go, and come back when it's done. Great program, lots of guides here and at doom9.org

  4. Hey thanks for the help!

I just tried Dr DivX and the conversion was great, much better than what I got with VDub, the program seemed far more user friendly as well (I'm really quite new to this sort of thing). It does do two passes as well.

I'll try the Gordian Knot program next and see how I get on with that.

The files I am converting were created by my capture card, I capture in "Extra Long Play DVD" mode which produces an MPEG files.
