Hi all. Im sort of new to this so bare with me. Lots of good info on this site, but its hard to dig through it all at times.

I just got a Panasonic SC-HT1000 which has a DVD Recorder with it. It burns to DVD-RAM and DVD-R(though I have yet to get it to recognize a blank DVD-R disk; getting panasonic media to see if that helps). I also am getting a Toshiba SDM1712 for my PC that reads DVD-RAM so I can convert the DVD-R on my PC.

Last night I downloaded TMPGEnc DVD Author to try and convert some mpg's I had to VOB's and then burn to DVD. The conversion goes great and when I burn there are no error's, but none of my standalone DVD players recognize the DVD's(I have 3, 2 sony's and the panasonic DVD writer). Now, if I use Sonic MyDVD which came with my Pacific Digital Mach-8 burner, and use there software to create the VOB's and burn, it works on the Sony's at least.

In alot of posts I see people use the TMPGEnc software to author, but most use Nero to burn. Why is this? I came among one post that says TMPGEnc has problems finalizing discs. Is this true? I also tried taking the output from TMPGEnc and burning it as a Data DVD using Sonic and that failed as well. Only when I used Sonic to create the VOB's and then burn can I get this to work. I have tried Fuji and Sony media.

Thanks for any help. I will have my toshiba DVD-RAM drive today, so am just trying to figure out how to piece all this together.

Good luck on getting a Toshiba 1712 DVD-ROM. Toshiba no longer makes the 1712 they have a newer model now 1802. I would suggest using a different brand of dvd media. Use what is recommended by Panasonic. That's just my opinion.

The 1712 is on sale at the toshiba website for like 35$ or so. As far as media, I have ordered some Panasonic media to see if the Recorder will recognize them. But my main players are Sony's and they also do not read the DVD's i've burnt using TMPGEnc, even when using Sony media.
I am wondering if this a problem with TMPGEnc software and thats why everyone use's Nero. I have also seen Gear Pro recommened.

  5. I've got a pioneer 105 and use the burning tool in TMPGEnc DVD Author whenever I use it to author. Never had any problems with playing in a standalone.

  6. I have the Panasonic E30 (records to DVD-RAM & DVD-R) and use TMPGEnc DVD Author frequently to make DVDs. I have burned folders in it which have played. Also, created ISOs with it and burned with DVD Decrypter. No problems.

However, like you, I have had problems with Fuji DVD-R media in the Panasonic recorder. I ended up using them in my PC drive (Matsushita) which reads RAM discs and burned them just fine.

Maybe there's something wrong with your recorder...

On the first video I made with TMPGEnc DVD Author...I burned 3 copies. I had TDA burn it, burned one with nero and had TDA write an ISO and I burned with Decrypter.

The 2 discs that I burned with TDA and Nero (5.5.10.43 I think) would play in my DVD player but not my brother's. The disc I burned with Decrypter would play in both.

I used RitekG04 media and burned all 3 at 4x.

So perplexed by the issue...off to best buy I went. I found for me anyway, that only the disc I burned with Decrypter would work in every player I tried (they didn't ask me to leave this time ), the other 2 discs would play in most but not all.

Now I don't know what the difference is, I remade the DVD 3 times for each disc, everything was exactly the same except in the end. I burned once, I had TDA write the folders, I had TDA write an ISO. I simply reloaded the project each time and had TDA output differently. I still think I made an error somewhere because the results do not make sense...but in any event...that was my experience with the whole deal.

Toshiba no longers sells the 1712 from their website. I checked and the product is no longer available. You could check ebay for them.
I use TMPGE DVD AUTHOR to author dvds then use NERO to burn. It works fine on my standalone dvd players.

  9. My Panny choked on almost all of the Fuji Taiwan DVD-Rs. I got 50 of the CompUSA's (Princo) and it loves those - it's the media. Personally, I find that discs burned with the TDA burner are generally more compatible over a wider range of players - no returns, hundreds burned!

I use the function built-in to TMPGEnc DVD Author to create an ISO IMAGE FILE

I then burn that ISO IMAGE FILE with DVD Decrypter.

I've yet to find a stand alone DVD player that doesn't like one of my DVD-R discs made in this fashion.

Between myself and some friends I've tried about 10 different DVD players spanning 10 different models by 6 different brands.

I tried Sony media as well with TDA and they did not work either, even in Sony players. I also tried Fuji, Sony, and TDK creating the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS under TDA and then burning a Data CD with Sonic MyDVD. Also tried with the Burn Image software I saw recommended here. Still no go.

Finnally I just threw down the money for Nero and burnt the folders using DVD-Video mode(do not see this option in Sonic, just Data) and the first burn I did worked(only on the Sony's, wont play on the Panasonic). Now I am going to burn a Panasonic disc and see if that works on all 3 players I have.

The toshiba 1712 is available from Toshiba on their www.shoptoshiba.com website. I just bought it from there the other night for 39$.
