mpg problems

I have some mpgs that are causing me a problem - normal mpgs are fine. However, I have some mpgs that arrived in several sections, maybe 8 or 10 or 12 or 5, whatever.

I discovered that the easiest and fastest method of combining them into one movie was to do a zip with no compression, and as long as they went into the zip file in the right order, when you play it, (after renaming it as an mpg) it plays fine.

Recently, it doesn't work - when I open the big mpg file, bsplayer, media player and irfanview all claim the file is only as long as the first section (like 1/8th or 1/10th of the whole.) and they play it for that incomplete length and then stop. If you click on the progress bar, it does jump to that point in the big file, but then the seconds count as if it was the small section and it stops early again.

VDub mpg version opens the whole thing fine, but that doesn't help me. I don't want to reencode it to avi - I want to fix it to work as it worked before.....

However, they work perfectly in WinDVD and in PowerDVD. Full length, everything works.

So what might the problem be? How do I reinstall the codecs for mpg and mpg2 (vcd and svcd) ? I know how to do it with avi codecs, but......

I installed Sound Forge 6 and 7 and then the problem started. Obviously I've removed them but it didn't fix the problem.

Why not try TMPGEnc > Mpeg Tools > Merge & Cut option. The Winzip method you are using is interesting though!

It will be a MPEG header problem - that's what you get when you don't do things the way they should be done !

I am intrigued as to your method working - I would have thought that the headers would be all screwed up and I'm surprised it ever worked. But if you say it has, then it has.

Here's a tip though - NEVER just rename extensions. It is more trouble than it is worth. Do things the correct way and you will NEVER have any problems.
