I use both Decrypter and Shrink to rip/back-up DVDs, but many times get errors on badly scratched disks.
Is there another program that is better for these kind of damaged disks or am I already working with the best? Is there a cleaning trick that will allow them to be played?
Any input is greatly appreciated.

You can buy scratch removing kits from almost any music, office supply or computer store. Now, I haven't tried this yet, but when I was laying in bed sick two days ago, I was watching the Wayne Brady show and saw something interesting. There was a guy on that talked about "household" tricks and he said that you can buff a mildy scratched CD or DVD with plain-old toothpaste and wipe clean with a lint free cloth. You could try that.
