Backing up to Hard Disks-Not using Disks any longer.

Haven't really seen much on this except in a round about way.

I usually buy somewhere between 100 and 200 DVDs a year and now that the year is ending I've looked back at my recent history of backing up my my commercial disks and surprisingly I've found that in the last 12 months I haven't backed up any of my disks to backup disks. Everything that I have backed up has been to Hardisks and that's the way I play them. It started with the purchase of a few Philips 5990s late last year and has now its moved to the WD and Seagate media players.

I just don't see myself ever going back to disk backups. With Esata 1 and 2 tb disks costing around $100 each, I find myself ordering them the way I used to order 100 pack -R disks. I used to rip my commercials to my hard disk than burn them to a -R. Now I've eliminated that time consuming process completely.

I realized how much I liked the Hard disk process when I found myself re-doing my Box set TV series collections to hard disk. Now a few years worth of a TV series is all on one disk. I have hard disks with Animation. Disks with comedy....etc. Nice.

Recently, I purchased a Bluray rom drive. I thought about buying a drive that would read as well as write. But than I figured since I was no longer burning DVDs to disk, why would I even want to begin that same old process with Bluray. So now I have Bluray Hard Dives as well. The DVDs are on disks formatted Fat32 so I can still play them on my 5990s. The Blurays, since they don't play on the 5990s anyway are formatted NTFS.

As I said at the beginning, I haven't seen many posts RE: the move away from burning backups and I was just wondering how many others are starting to move in this direction.

I personally do a mix of backing up. For movies that get a lot of play time I backup to h264 for easy access on my htpc and also for easy transfer to my tivo. I still backup all of my dvds to SL using dvdrebuilder. Using blank dvd's is still pretty important to me. I have small kids that are "independent" and want to "do it themselves". Can't begin to think of how many times I've had to re-burn disneys' "Cars" for my youngest son.

i believe media backups, if kept in the right conditions(i.e...in sleeves...free from scratches/sunlight/dust)...is imo a bit safer...ive seen and had too many HD's go bad from sitting or not being used...ive had 3 hd's die in the same amount of time if backup'd umpteens amount of dvd's and the the Memorex(RICOHJPN1) discs i started using back in 2003 still scan out perfect and work like a charm...a dvd or media backup kept right, will last a long time...i however cant stand the amount of discs around here...i do like the idea of everything on a small device like a HD(space saver)...theres no guarantee SSD drives will be any better...ive had 2 or 3 thumb/flash drives crap out on me also...maybe i need to just rent a storage shed

I use HDD to backup my collection. I rip to an ISO with the MDS file and put it in a folder, I sometimes add memorabilia to the folder. I use VLC to watch the ISO's on my HTPC.
