  1. Still a newbie, though I have backed-up, captured, and created a few dozen DVD's over the past couple of months, using TMPEnc Plus, DVD Movie Studio 3, DVD Shrink, and DVDDecrypter...and to date, haven't created a single coaster. (knock on wood...)

But I'm wondering what the difference is between using DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter for ripping the contents of a DVD that DOESN'T require any compression in order to fit on a single DVD-R disk. Isn't DVD Shrink simply copying the digital data exactly as it appears on the DVD? Or, does DVD Shrink do something to the DVD files, even when compression isn't necessary? As I understand it, DVD Decrypter copies the DVD's files exactly as they appear on the disc. I was under ther impression that DVD Shrink did the same thing...UNLESS you're adding compression.

I have several DVD's that easily fit onto a single DVD-R disc, and I've been using DVD Shrink to copy them...Nero 6 to burn. Usually, I do the "reauthor" thing, since I'm not fond of menus and such...just the movie. Would DVD Decrypter be better suited for copying the files...and if so, why?

    Thanks.

Either one will do the job you want as long as it works. In my experience I've used both to rip DVD's with no compression to my harddrive. However, I have had cases where DVD Shrink wouldn't work on a particular DVD where DVD Decryptor would.

In terms of copying the "digital data exactly as it appears on the DVD" ... that's not really what they do. The data is encrypted. A DVD player, or in your case DVD ripping software, unencrypts the DVD as it rips it to your harddrive. What you wind up with is an unencrypted version of the DVD. Otherwise, you could do a straight copy in Windows Explorer instead of having to rip you DVD. Once, however, you have an unencrypted DVD, which you get when you burn your ripped DVD back to DVD+-R(W), you can do a straight copy (DVD to DVD or DVD to HD).

I use Shrink for DVD5's because it will write the disk when finished. DVDDecryptor has known issues with my DVDRW, so I can't use it to write with.

I use DVDDecryptor on really badly scratched disks, since Shrink barfs on read errors.
