It seems there are no options to buy a DIVX player if you live in the United States. That's too bad. When will the new Liteon come out? The old 2001/2002 models were the only DIVX players ever made available to US consumers, as far as I know....and they were hard to find. Europeans, on the other hand, have a dozen models to choose from!

Don't tell me about the non-existent Pixa or the overpriced neuneu.

  2. Yeah a few of them are out there......

    Poloroid at (Best Buy)

    Lite-on "Forget the model(s)"

    Go video "forget those too"

I think KISS also makes DIVX compatible players

I am undecided right now..... But I think I am gonna go with the APEX AD-2600 (Not Divx compatible) but plays everything else

    Check them out

Thanks for the info about the Polaroid -- now that's a player I can buy, try, and return if it doesn't work well!

I don't know where you can get the Lite-on's anymore, and I doubt you'd ever find them at a local retail store. I'd rather buy a dvd player at a brick-and-mortar store, since it is likely I'll need to return it.

    Kiss players are quite expensive.

For non-Divx player I recommend the Philips DVD727. It plays everything, plus has 3:2 pulldown for best quality, and has a nice smooth mechanism and good construction. I've owned 2 Apex's and have found them to always seem kind of "clunky". The Philips is the best I've found so far, and I've tried almost a dozen DVD players in the last 6 months.

  4. Thanks for the advise !!!

I read the DVD Player reviews to the right and the Philips 727 does have high remarks. The only reason I was considering the APEX AD-2600 was the Full Screen Function (converts widescreen dvd's to fullscreen) Did any of your APEX players have this function ?

I am curious as to how well the fullscreen mode performs.......

Otherwise I will probably go with the 727 or a Divx player

I had the original AD600A and the 3-disc 5131. Neither Apex had a full-screen function that I knew about. To each his own, but I think you're missing out if you have the DVD convert widescreen to fullscreen. No DVD player will be able to intelligently pan-and-scan...all it can do is chop off equal amounts on both sides of the picture...if there was anything interesting or important on the edges, then you'll be missing it. I guess I'd rather have a slightly smaller picture than have parts of it missing. You can always move closer to the screen or get a bigger television if it's a problem. Anyway, the 5131 would play anything I threw at it, but it had occasional video glitches. And when playing MPEG burned to DVD without authoring, some mpeg files would have *lots* of glitches, to the point that they were unwatchable. This same disc would play perfectly in the Philips. In general, the video quality is just better with the Philips, and the construction is obviously better.

You can buy the Philips at Walmart.com (about $80). What I like about this is that you can keep it for up to 3 months, and if you don't like it, just return it to your local Walmart for a refund -- now that's the way to try out DVD players! Places like BestBuy and Circuit City only give you one month, I think. For some reason, the Philips isn't available at retail stores...only online...but you can return it to a retail store.

  6. Thats what I was I thinking too about the fullscreen mode.... Probably isn't "intelligent"....

The other thing I thought was cool about the AD-2600 was it also functions as a karokee player

But I just might try out the 727...... The only thing now I am thinking is maybe I should just get a player that also supports Divx. I make backups of my DVD's but I have never burnt Divx to DVD.....

The thing I hate about widescreen DVD's (even though I have a big screen) is the fact I am not getting full use of it.

Yes, karaoke is important to me, too. However, neither of my Apex's will play the karaoke format (cd+g). That is why I have a CAVS DVD-202G just for the purpose of karaoke, though it is also a good play-anything DVD player.

Sure, the Apex will play DVD- and VCD-based karaoke disks, but CD+G is really the standard in the karaoke world. There are many CD+G compatible players out there, but I don't know that Apex makes any.

  8. The AD-2600 Does function as a karaoke player also. I can order it online at Wal Mart for $49.00......

But now I am at an indecision

Philips 727, A Divx Player, or the 2600.......

    Too many choices
