Hi - I've recently started downloading DivX from the web, and am now looking to buy a DivX compatible DVD player, and am interested in the Toshiba SD270E as it seems to be a reasonable good value product. (Perhaps someone can confirm if this unit is any good). I do have a few downloads which have AC3 sound, and am wondering if the SD270E will recognize this format. If it does not, can anyone recommend a player which does (i'm not looking to spend too much as it will only be occasionally used). Thank you.

I don't know about the SD270E but the Philips DVP-5960 (and most of their other Divx/DVD players) can play Divx AVI with AC3 audio.

Most standalone DVD players that support Divx will play AC3 files with Divx, but I must warn you that the video bitrate is very important in playback. On my Philips DVP-642, if the video bitrate is much above 1500, it won't play AC3 without stuttering. This is due to a limitation of the chip in the player used to decode Divx. The Toshiba probably will play AC3 audio with Divx video, but just be aware that if the video bitrate is high, it could also have problems like my Philips player does. You'd have to test the Toshiba to see.
