  1. What is the general consensus on Seagate drives here? Best Buy has a 120GB HDD for $69.99, after rebate, but I am not sure what their reputation is. I have two Maxtor 40GB right now, but I would like to replace one of them with the 120. It seems to be a good price, but are they reliable? Opinions???

I've always liked Seagate drives. I haven't used any of their recent ones, but they've gotten good reviews. Apparently a lot of their current 7200RPM drives are about as fast as comparable models from the other major manufacturers, but they run cooler and quieter. My past experiences with Seagate drives have been much better than with Western Digital or Maxtor.

  3. I have a Seagate 20GB drive I got when 20GB drives came out. Probably one of the most stable drives I've had. I've had a 4.3GB Seagate (even older), that drive, and a Maxtor 80GB drive in a linux machine. If I lost power, which happened, the 4.3GB drive (which held the linux installation) and the 20GB drive (which held more important files and documents remained intact when checking the filesystem. The Maxtor would routinely lose anything from single files here or there, or the entire partition table. I am still amazed that it kept data intact for all the power problems I had. I recently got an IBM DeskStar 40GB drive and I am impressed with that drive too. I originally bought the 20GB as a Western-Digital but the drive I got was DOA and had it replaced with the Seagate and never looked back.

For ATA drives I lump Maxtor and WD into the same category as they're almost identical in function (I use them here and there in my system). The ATA Seagate I have seems to run cooler and quieter than the other ATA drives. I've got the 120GB Seagate running as my boot drive. I haven't really had problems with the other ATA drives though so they're all decent. However my two Seagate SCSI drives I'm absolutely in love with. I couldn't recommend any other SCSI drive than the Cheetahs.

  5. Got 2X120 maxdors 8 meg cache and 2X120 Segates 2 meg cache and 1 120 seagate baracoda...
The seagates are by far the better drive in tems of being totally silent in operation, data transfer there is next to no diffrence between the 8 meg cache ones...
    Not bothered by small problems...

  7. Wow! Thank you all! You made my decision very easy to make. Noise is one of the only complaints I have with Maxtor, and if Seagate's is quieter, then I guess I will be happy. I appreciate all your thoughts. Thank you!
