  1. I tried out the DVDShrink and I loved it, but since I upgraded from the earlier version to 3.x, every following version presented me the same problem; when I would set up the DVDShrink to rip, encode and burn a certain DVD, it never succeeded. It would start analyzing and after some twenty seconds it would spit out the "Can't read from the DVD device" error. It didn't happen before.

I switched back to SmartRipper and DVD2One, the ones I used before, but I really miss DVDShrink. The latest version, 3.1.6. if I'm not mistaking, is showing the same error.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have seen other posts here where they use DVDdecrypter to rip problem movies before running DVDshrink. I haven't had any problems with shrink so far with any of the movies I have backed up. I use Autoshrink ISO>DVDshrink>DVDdecrypter to burn and it works great. I think I'm using 3.15 right now.

  5. Huh, now comes another embarrassing part - when I rip the movie with either the SmartRipper or the DVDDecrypter (the latter has shown little more efficiency) and start DVDShrink afterwards, I get a weird message that there is no VIDEO_ISO file or something similar, so I gave up on trying it out that way.

Still, the issue is how to get the DVDShrink working properly. I tried to find the new drivers for my DVD ROM (Sony DDU1621), but none were issued, so this option falls flat as well…

I have the same Sony DDU-1621 and was having the same problem. I found that the Sony was operating in PIO mode 4, and nothing I did got it to operate in UDMA. I tried ripping with my HP DVD Writer 200i, and it worked like a charm with no errors. I ordered a new Lite-On DVD and will trash the Sony when the Lite-On is installed.

I had the same problem with DVD Shrink v 3.14 on my Toshiba DVD-ROM/CDRW drive - no problem with the Panasonic Multi-Drive. I suspect the lower power of the laser in the Toshiba. It also has problems reading some burned DVDs the Panny will play.

  8. Yes, I suspected as much… This Sony was not the best choice, but aside of this issue, it did me a fair service. The only problem is the fact that my DVD recorder (Ricoh) is another deck, so I can't pull the entire operation, rip, encode and burn in a single set of instructions.

Thank you for your input, gentlemen!
