  1. I just purchased a Playstation 2. Before the kids tear into it and scratch up the game disks, I was wondering if I can use programs like DVD Backup and DVD2ONEX to make copies of the games. Any ideas/tutorials would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

you just copy them directly over

    put disk in
load toast, go to COPY and set to another drive for burn if you have 2 drives or go up to FILE and SAVE AS DISK IMAGE, then burn the disk image.

its been covered before so a search will yield more help.
i think you have to have some sort of modification to the ps2 for these disks to work... but i could be worng.

ps2daddy if you want to chime in ....

  3. Yes, you will need a mod chip for the burned copies to work, you can order online if you are handy with a soldering gun, or if you look hard enough some private dealers will do the work for you.

  4. You can use dvd backups made with process explained earlier in post with the following fliptop case.

Takes about 10 minutes to install, no soldering at all.

I don't understand how one of those PS2Fliptop cases can help when you need a mod chip. What exactly do they do?

  6. All a modchip does is feed the system startup info which makes the games playable. Using the fliptop, this startup info is instead placed on a disc which is used to "prime" the PS2, the disc is then swapped for a burned copy of the game. It means less soldering (there is a very small fifficult to reach and sensitive solder point on the back of the mobo.) and less chance of creating a $180 brick.

That makes more sense, but you mentioned it does require some soldering? And where would you get one of those "primer" discs?

  8. Actually no soldering on the flip-top. Just too understated for my own good. By "much less" I actually mean none. As for the startup discs, they should be sold by whoever is selling the flip-top. (the cases are pretty useless without them) You'll need one for cd-rom games, and one for dvd-rom games.

My advice to you would be to forget about the flip top. Not all games will work with this method. They do have non solder mod chips, but they are a waste of time also.

I paid $150 (shipping included) to have mine professionally modded with the Messiah chip about a year and a half ago. It is still running strong and it plays every game I've copied. You just insert the backup, PS1 or PS2, and it boots just like the original.

I don't know about a Mac, but I have a PC and all I do is insert the original disc in one drive a blank DVD or CD in the my burner and click copy at 1x. Works perfectly every time.

  10. I just purchased a DVD burner (finallY) that is dvd +/- RW compatible. I have a PS2 and I modded it about 2 years ago... Works great with the GameShark and the CD-R games that I have played thus far. I am wondering if DVD based games require any sort of special attention or if you can just do a exact backup of the disk and they will work? Can someone please help me out? Thank you!

Yeah.. PS2 dvd backups are copied the same way. I have a DMS chip installed in a v7 US machine. The soldered chips are a lot more reliable than the flip top mods. Just use Alcohol 120, Nero, or similar disk copy software. They pretty much all work well for backing up.

  12. Great. Thanks a lot for your help.. This is probably one of the best and most comprehensive websites I have ever been on, and has been an enormous help during my beginning period of "backing up" DVD's...

Um if you need to use Gameshark to swap for CD-R's...you've got a NeoKey or SBox. That means no DVD-R's. That mod was created for PSX, and PS2 games ripped to CD-R...I don't know anyone who can actually play DVD-R's that way with Gameshark.

  14. I can't remember the exact version, but it is either the Neo 2.2 or 2.5... The manual and websites claim that it can play burned dvd's... I will have to give it a shot later, and I will let everyone know if it works or not...

Here is one of the websites it is referenced on...

Galactica summed it up in a nut shell thats all that you have to do but if you like the long drawn out version

For those that need help with a mac

    3. Select "Save as image " under the file menu
    4. Double Click on the image then Record image

(note you must have enough space on your hard drive to do this)

    or

If you just have a CD-RW and want to just burn it

    1. Select image copy
    2. insert CD game
    3. Click on record
it will ask you to place in a blank CD-R When ready

(note you must have enough space on your hard drive to do this)

Fliptops will play about 85% of most games with no problems but depending on your ps2 you will have to use another boot disk in conjunction with the swap magic disks to play the rest. (you have to trick the ps2 into thinking it was never opend to swap games using a flip-top, knife swap, no - solder chip, or just leave you top off)

Here is a list of all the games that require an additional disk depending on your ps2 version

    www.swapmagicfix.com

With the modchip you just stick a ps2 DVD-R game in like your normally would with no fuss no muss and they play every game with no problem. for psone CD-R games depending on the chip you have to hold down a button for 4 seconds before you insert the disk

Cost a little more to get a chip installed than to get a flip top and swap magic disks but if you had 3 games that are scratched beyond repair or broken the chip and install pays for itself since you dont have to rebuy those games. (also note that a disk doctor can fix about 85% of most scratched CD, DVD's)

The one catch is that wheter you use a flip-top or modchip you will not be able to play any of the current online games by using a backup but your original will always work you just have to disable your chip to garentee this (takes a 8 second button press)
(Basically any game after madden 2004 will have DNAS online protection)

Also its different strokes for differnt folks but I prefer a modchip anyday

If you need a reliable installer let me know send me a pm

    Hope that helps
