  1. I've got a LDW-411S in a USB 2.0 enclosure. Using Nero 6.302. Burning regular CDRs work just fine, but when I try to set up a DVD-R burn (video or data), Nero never makes it past the "Writing files to cache" phase. Locks up the app and can't even "End Task". Eventually turning off the drive shuts Nero down. I've read all the USB related posts and know that installing the drive as an internal EIDE device will most likely work, but wanted to know if there are any success stories out there with DVD burning in a external USB 2.0 box. What did you do to make it work?

    Thanks in advance.

Did you install the dvd burner into the external enclosure yourself, or did you buy it like that. I have a external Sony 500 (purchased it that way) and have used it with both the USB and firewire connections.

  3. UPDATE:

My LDW-411S is an internal EIDE drive, but I put it in the ME320 USB 2.0 external enclosure.

Just tried burning about 4 GBs worth of data to a DVD+RW disc (came with the drive) and it worked! So I'm thinking that burning DVD+R discs will be ok. But when I tried to burn a DVD-R disc (Imation), I run into the problem where Nero locks up at the "Writing files to cache" part.

Any other suggestions besides installing the drive in as a "true EIDE" device? I really want this to work as an external USB 2.0 drive because I'm using it on my work PC! :P

    Thanks all!

The only thing that I can suggest is that if it gives you any more problems you may have to try a different external enclosure (if possible).

  5. I have the same set up, and had the same problem, I just over looked installing my USB 2.0 Motherboard Drivers. That might help you.

i had the same problems you have. i have a pioneer 106 burner that i had in a me320 usb2.0 enclosure. i could read dvds and cds. and i could burn cds and dvd+rw's, but i could not burn dvd+r or dvd-r. i got the firewire version of the same enclosure and have been burning trouble free ever since!!! based on my experiences and the experiences of others, i would say the usb 2.0 enclosure is the source of the problem.

I seem to have the same problem. I bought a NEC ND-1300A internal dvd burner and I put it in my old external cd writer's enclosure(USB2.0), I just swapped the CD-RW drive with the NEC. It burns all formats fine with the programs that I used (DVD X COPY PLATINUM and NERO 6.0.0.0). Then stopped using DVD X COPY PLATINUM and went to using NERO RECODE 2 to burn my dvd backups, this is where the problem starts. I upgraded from NERO BURNING ROM 6.0.0.0 to NERO BURNING ROM 6.3.0.2 and I upgraded to the lastest version of NEROVISION EXPRESS 2 which contains RECODE. I tried burning a dvd with RECODE and it encodes fine but when it tries to start the burning process it locks up my drive and the only way to get the program to end task is to turn off my NEC. I thought maybe it was RECODE so I tried burning the encoded dvd files that were on my hard drive (made from RECODE) with NERO BURNING ROM 6.3.0.2 and it did the same thing lock up my drive and I had to turn the drive off again. I downgraded back to NERO BURNING ROM 6.0.0.0 and tried burning the same encoded dvd files from my hard drive and it worked fine without locking up my NEC ND-1300A drive. It was the new version of NERO all along! It's sucks that I had to downgrade to get it to work, but o well at least it works. I hope this works for all of you!

I was very close to buying an enclosure, but I've heard so many problems with them and now you guys have added even more negative experiences. I wanted an enclosure like most of you, because it was cheaper than buying an external DVD writer and I wanted to be able to write from both my desktop and my laptop. But now I feel it's safer to just use a transfer cable to transfer my writeable files from my laptop to my desktop for burning.

Have you guys tried out the latest version of Nero (6.3.0.3) & the latest Recode that's associated with that release? Just curious if that fixed the problems.
