  1. I'm using Nero 6 to burn my dvds and all is going well apart from the estimated time to burn disks.

When Nero starts to burn the dvd it displays the time it'll take to complete (usually about 20 mins) but this is never correct. When the timer counts down to zero the disk is only about 50% burnt, it carries on burning the time remaining at zero.

Obviously this isn't much of a problem, I just wondered if anyone else had this problem and if it could be resolved as it's kind of handy to have an accurate estimated time.

Got the same problem. I'm using 1x Princo dvd's and Nero says its using 20 minutes to burn. Must be a bug.

    1x...60mins approx
    2x...30mins approx
4x...15mins approx.Roughly the time taken irrelevant of the counter. As a rule if you still use 1x media in a 4x burner the media will only allow it to burn at 1x (unless the burner has some hacked firmware)

  4. well I'm using 4x media in a 8x drive and it never burns in 15 mins usually double that.

  5. Then its burning at 2x and not 4x then.

  6. yes.
    but why?
what should the speed be in kB/s?

  7. Nero might shop the option of 4x but actually burn at 2. My Sony does that with certain brands of media.

What media are you using ?

  8. It took my NEC-ND2500A 8x DVD burner 35 mins to read and 35 mins to write to the 4x TDK disk at the speed of 6x using either Nero 5.5.10 or 6.0, kind of slow (weird) isn't it? DVDX took 1/2 amount of time but I preferred Nero for the playback quality. Anyway, is that a normal burning time?

  9. If I burn with TDK, and a few other brands, my burn times vary widely.
If I burn with TY's or comparable, my burn times are usually within the times hardcoreruss stated.
BTW. You might try unchecking "Determine maximum speed" in the Nero burn menu.

You have to be in DMA mode to write faster than 2x. Cough up for some real RITEK 4x's and try those. 4 things affect burn speed: DMA/PIO, Burner and firmware, Burning software, and the media you are using. Some have an incompatable 4x write strategy. Sometimes your firmware doesn't know what to do with the disk, so it uses a (slower) default method. Sometimes it's just a bad combination of the 4...

Media my ass.If it says 4x it should burn at 4x, the problem lays elsewhere. This is drastic but I suffered the same(pioneer 106) with every media type and someone wispered...'bet ur using XP'. Checked another forum and lo and behold the same symptoms.the cure was simple.....back up ur data and do a fresh install of XP.Cured!.
Now burns any cheap crap at 4x...bulkpaq,yellows, u name it no problemo, but like I said..drastic! Check around other forums and ask them about XP.very temperamental. It does not always detect hardware fully and omits certain bits when added later.[/u]

  14. That does seem like a drastic solution, but I might have to try it if everything else fails.

I'm pretty sure the media I'm using is ok, Nero recognizes it as 4x compatible (it even says it's writing at 4x), I had heard that theres a problem with the drive's firmware though.

How do I change the dma mode?

  15. Yeah i have that problem. I burn a 2x dvd-r and it says 15 mins but takes 30. I dont get it. They might as well just take that function out.

  16. I've looked into it a bit more and get the feeling that it's my drive's firmware thats causing it. Apparently the Teac DV-W58E isn't properly supported and neither teac or dell are planninga firmware update to solve the problem. So it looks like I'll be sending it back and getting a different one.

I also have this problem, but only since I upgraded to nero 6. I wonder if it has something to do with the speed test function (in the window just before you burn)

Had this problem yesterday nero burning at half speed
For some reason my HD was stuck in PIO mode (dvd drive was DMA)
Tried alsorts to fix it - updated chipset drivers, tried to manually set it to both PIO + DMA, install latest aspi drivers
    still no fix.

Then read some ware that if w2k/xp has experienced 6 or more atapi errors on an ide channel it locks it to PIO without telling you

How I fixed it - uninstalled the offending ide channel
after a reboot all is now fine back to burning at full speed

Use at your own risk (small risk)

There is a registry hack to fix it (but only for XP afaik- didn't work for me on w2k) at this address

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contr ol\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0001" <----- 0001 MY offending ide channel - YOURS could be different.

then locate the key "MasterIdDataCheckSum" and change value to zero - reboot

    Hope this helps
