Ok, here is the deal. I'm trying to help get roadrunner installed for my folks at their house. Currently, they have standard cable, they only pay for one line but it's split in the basement so that it can be run all over the house. Here's my question. First, the roadrunner line is a separate line altogether right but it is a form of coaxial cable? If so that means all of the current standard cable would be untouched right? If that's the case the cable company may not see the splitter in the basement. He's concerned that if they notice it they may want to charge him for all of the rooms that are connected.

So can you give me some information about how this whole thing works, I'm a bit confused.

  2. They use the same cable to the house, attach a special spitter, then they will run a NEW line to the room you want the cable modem in.

I believe that what you are affraid of no longer applies. I'm pretty sure they give standard cable to all the rooms.

If not, just unhook the extra rooms then, after he's gone re-attach the other rooms.

Interestingly enough, when we talked to them today they said that if we already have their cable service(which we do)then we already have roadrunner. All we need is a cable modem and the software, no new cabling is necessary. It amazes me that my Dad already has RoadRunner on a standard RG-6 cable that has been in the house for years. But that is what the people told him today so if it's really true then our job is actually very easy and he would just need to worry about routing the lines to diff. computers.

  4. I've had it done in 3 different houses. They always run a seperate cable to the room even if it already has an cable going to it.

There are two in this room I'm in right know.

    Just talking from experience.

Don't see why they need to except, the other cable in this room is connected to a TV. So I guess the one cable to this room can't do both... hense 2 cables.

Not all coaxle is RG-6 and if I were you I wouln't let them load any software. You don't need there software to get roadrunner. If you want to bog down your system with software... load an AOL disk.

    Pyrate,

Well, actually, no, that is not your only problem. You have to sign up and pay, and configure the account, get the main machine running, then get a cable/DSL router, and run Cat 5 cable to each of the computers, and configure them.

If you just hooked all the lines up to the RG6, it wouuld require a modem for each machine, and a bill for each machine.

With Comcast (then AT&T ), when I had a prob with my main machine, and connected with the other machine, I got a message that this is not the machine (MAC address ) that is registered to this account, would I like to rename this machine.

Yours will be an internal network going through the router, and, to Poadrunner, will look like 1 machine.

Hope you are able to run Cat 5, or are intending to buy a pain in the ass wireless router.

    Cheers,

    George

BTW, what they meant was all their cable, or at least in your neighborhood was capable of 2 way data transfer.

Are you getting off DSL, or were you dialup. If dialup, welcome to the world. You'll love it. I don't recall if you are college age or not, and have had hi-speed.

    Marco,

Don't even joke about loading AOL. That damn disk doesn't even let you browse the disk. Friend of mine tried to, to see if there was anything useful on it, and it took over his machine.

Had one hell of a time getting rid of it. Don't recall, but he just might have had to reformat. It drops turds all over the place.

    Cheers,

    George

Thanks, yeah I guess they could just use a splitter in the main room so the tv and cable modem could share the line. It does sound like we can just use our already existing cable line though we just need as you said to sign up the account get the modems etc. and get the main machine running. As for new to high speed, I have been on it before when I was away at school last year...now I'm back home for awhile going to school in Columbus and on dial up...which I had forgotten how much it sucks!
