'Unnecessary'? It was necessary to compress a DVD9 (up to 8.6GB) DVD to 4.3 GB. DVD Shrink also has a one button back up (just hit backup).
DVD Shrink is free, and has a lot of features DVD2One doesn't. So if you've already got DVD2One why not try out DVD Shrink on the same movie, and see which you like best -
I'm not usually a big fan of the 'one step DVD9 to DVD5' programs. I've only used DVD2ONE once and I found the same thing you did

Have you ever tried Pinnacle InstantCopy?. I've read that it gives you the best quality.
I use it, and have lots of nice options, like excluding extras without losing the MENUS (as opposed to DVD Shrink). I really like this program. Is it just my case ... or all wifes hate computers? -
If you doing a single movie to DVD5 than use DVD Shrink, which I find is the best in this case because of user control over what they want. Simply the best out there!
If you want two movies on one DVD without having to recompress again and again than use DVD2One. I use DVD2One for the purpose of putting two or three movie onto one DVD5. -
I've used both. DVD shrink gives better quality if you use the deep analysis and aren't to particular about the extras and DVD2One will keep everything but the quality does seem to suffer on a conversion from DVD-9 to DVD 5 but you can split to two discs and not loose any quality.
I picked up Instant copy 7 out of the bargain bin at Future Shop and would have to say that it is without a doubt better than anything I have ever used including nero recode. If the choice was IC7-8 or DVDShrink, it definitely would be IC 7.Just shut up and listen dumbass -

IC8 does a better job than Shrink in keeping menu and removing extras. IC8 replaces all removed extras with a blank screen...DVDshrink can only do still images. Also the removed extras in DVDShrink will play for the duration of the original extras. Where in IC8 the blank screen will play for less than a second. -
I started out with DVD2one but then I found DVD Shrink and never went back. I tried a copy of CloneDVD for a couple of backups but DVD Shrink has the best feature of all - it's free!

I have both DVD Shrink and IC8. I use IC8 if I want to keep menus and delete extras. I don't see how DVD Shrink allows you to do this, because when you re-author in DVD Shrink, you cannot keep a working menu. Please correct me if I'm wrong and explain how to do this.

I have tried almost every program there is, ans DVDShrink is my absolute favorite for backing up my DVD's onto DVDR!
I always throw away menu's and extra's. Quality is very good when using "Deep Analisys" in DVDShrink.
And, DVDShrink is FREE!!! Why pay lots of cash for other programs that suck most of the time, while the best program is for free? -
I use IC8, but found that still the transcoding is uneven or sometimes unrealiable as you have to adjust the settings using hidden settings editor and just play with them because it still reports the dvd-r or +r as not being large enough, even for copying just the main movie only. IC8 though does have much better quality than IC7, but is quite slower.

noki,
That is all well and good but that introduces another program into the picture. DVD Shrink on its own wont do it. IC8 will.
with IC8 you simply say movie only keep menu and Transcode away.
No gimmicks required. -

thanks for all you have contributed to the dvd scene, NYPlayer -
noki,
That is cool. I see now that the guide is a completely free solution....to keep menu's main movie and no extras.
Thanks. I have to give it a try. -

very wierd results.
because of this topic I had to run a test. I decided to do a disc that would really tax the programs so I could see the difference. I did an X-files DVD, a disc with 4 episodes and no extras (S1D1), so the compression would be really apparent.
my results:
DVD2One was significantly better. With DVDShrink there were parts where a person walked across a lightly colored backgrouns and a streak of black chunks would follow the person! This was not present with the DVD2One copy.
my settings:
DVDShrink: I only kept english AC3 and I made all things other than the titles at absolute highest compression, leaving the maximum amount for the 4 episodes (I was really trying to get a better result out of Shrink because I was considering switching)
DVD2One: What can I say other than "Full Disc" 4472MB.
anyway, I will not be switching. DVD2One kicks ass in my book.
also - I will post stills of my results soon, need to clean up my office -
What constitutes high bitrate/low bitrate? I would think that all DVD's are high bitrate. Most DVD's are 6000average/9800 maximum. I have seen DVD's with maximum's as low as 7000.

Hi all.
Slightly off-topic: for menus+movie-only give TitleSetBlanker a try (it's free).
Not as powerful as DVDStripper, but much simpler and faster. -

DvdShrink do not allows to maintain menů without extra; but this it is a safety non only a limit.
Nobody considers that removing extra maintaning menů may be dangerous in some cases.
Infact I did found, with IC8, that allows this procedures, that the result was been unplayble. This because in some DVD there are some extra files that will be addressed during playing by some feautures of menu. So when you try to use these menů features you will lose control of your dvdplayer; in addition if some of these video files are used at the start of DVD and so you will not be able to play this DVD.
To avoid this risk you must know what file will be used before to eliminate all extra present in DVD. This is not so easy and requires IFOEDIT with Play DVD features and a lot of your time.
However IC8 have a better transcoder algorithm than all others program 8but it is slow) ; DVDshrink may be tailored better for your copy.
Still compression is very good for end's titles and for extras.
My conclusion is: Dvdshrink until the compression is 75-80% or over; IC8 when you are under 70% but over 55%.
When you are under 55% is better to use two DVD or a really encoder process with Cinema Craft Encoder (but this is too time consuming....better two DVD) -

Transcoding is about the lesser of evils.
Again, DVD2ONE for high bit, DVDSHRINK for medium low.
Other software takes too long or does worse.
Only reason to go with DVDSHRINK at low/medium is DVD2ONE corrupts and macroblocks low levels. I'd rather have mosquito noise than macroblocks.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)
