It looks like the freeware DVD Shrink and DVDFab Decrypter would do about the same as DVD2ONE if you need to back up a existing DVD to a smaller size.
DVDForger is a re-encoder that may take a while, while Shrink is a transcoder and very quick. But if you have to reduce the size quite a bit, a re-encoder may be a better choice for preserving quality. DVD Rebuilder may be similar in that it re-encodes a DVD. -
Did you download the demo of DVDFab, or the freeware ripper DVDFab HD Decrypter ? They are not the same thing.

If you want to convert AVI files to dvd you don't have to join them. Just add all avis in a dvd converter tool like convertxtodvd, dvd flick and convert to one dvd.
