Vanster, what are you talking about? DVD-R support was only added after the v.9 systems. The very first model wasn't able to play DVD-R's, they weren't even in the market yet.

Sega CD can play CD-R's, something not on the market at that systems time of release.

Sony boasting this "+/- recordable support" was a smokescreen for them to put out a new version and not look dumb. It was lie about that or say "There was something wrong with old Playstation 2's, and the last ones were too noisy, so we put in better fans for these new ones" or "Now we have an infrared port for the DVD Remote built in and better recordable media compatibility". Truth is, all versions can read recordable media, its just up to the laser in the system. An odd few early ones (v1-4) can even read DVD+R's. My V7 can play movies on DVD-R/RW, and DVD+R/RW, my friends V4 can do the same, my friends V2 can only read DVD-R.

Yeah, but if they can play recordable formats, then why can't all of them, play all the of formats? Why do some only play DVD-RW, then others play DVD+R but not DVD+RW, then some play DVD+R but not DVD-R. That doesn't make any sense. Doesn't goofy Sony have any quality control over their laser production? This is starting to sound a little conspiratory here isn't it? :P

  7. THUNDER, That’s like saying why can only some burners burn + and some burn – or both. It has to do with the laser in the PS2 I have a v4 and it plays + and – but for some reason (the laser!!!) it seems to play the plus more reliable.

  8. Best way is to just try & see what happens. It should play anything for dvds but games should be -r.

  9. I have version 7. For a long time I didn't think my PS2 could play my homebrew recorded videos with TMPGEnc (they tend to skip a lot like crazy). I thought it was a media problem at first but it took me months to figure out that I should have been using VBR encoding instead of CBR.

The same reason there have been 11 (Yes, you read right...11) revisions of the PS2 dating back to the Version 0 in Japan on launch, up to V10 which is now available in all regions. Sony is in this business to make money, how do you make money? You find a way to make something cost less, and cut any and every corner possible. Sony keeps finding ways to make it cost less, and V5+ systems are of MUCH MUCH better quality than V0-4 PS2's thankfully...but the early revisions were sketchy. Lots of problems with them, I only know a handful of people whos early PS2's still work.
