  1. The buffer level when burning a dvd is going crazy from low to high to low to high....I don't get it...

The Buffer Read Level stays at like 50% too....is their a resource running thats causing this problem because its slowing my burns down considerably.

Is there something you can do to keep the Buffer Level steady? Anyone help is appreciated.

    EDIT

Guys would this work for me... "uninstall the ide channel the burner is installed on and reboot to get it running in dma mode again."

would that help me?? if I just unistall the drive in device manager...and rebooted my pc?

if the burner and dvd rom is on the same ide channel put 1 of them on a different channel and change the jumpers on the back of both of them

  3. I have 2 HD's on the primary...

and my DVD/CD-RW and DVD-RW on the seconday IDE

are you saying I need to put one of the DVD drives on the primary and one of the HD's on the secondary channel so that I have one Disc Drive and one Hard Drive on each channel??

I guess I would just set the jumpers to Cable Select??

Does the fluctuating buffer level cause the burn fail? You maybe worrying about nothing.
Placing a HD and a CD/DVD drive on the same cable is a bad idea. You will slow the HD down to the transfer speed of the CD,you will turn a ATA133 HD into and ATA33 HD.

  6. no it doesn't cause the burn to fail...but it slows it down from say 4x 1.7gig 6 minutes DVD..to 15 minutes for 1.6 gigs..which is way off

I think this has to do with the drive that I had the file on (the G: drive) was very badly defragged...hopefully when I go home for lunch..it will burn in 6-7 minutes...I defragged every drive last night and G again this morning...

I tested my PC on pcpitstop.com and it shows transfer speeds on my hd with G: being the slowest...I Think I may need to format that drive NTFS again and let it be..there are only a few dvd's on it so its no big deal...and maybe that will correct the issue.

We will see what happens when I goto burn at lunch....because if it fluctuates again...and I reformat the drive..and it fluctuates again...I don't know what do...

    GUYS PLEASE ANSWER ME THIS

the drive that is defragged is on an ATI controller card...where do I go in device manager to make sure the drive is set to DMA transfer mode?? I know how to do it with the primary and secondary to see if they are in DMA mode, but what about my HD on my controller card which is the one that has the file I am burning?

  7. Guys....I figured it out..somewhat...

only the drive on the ATA Controller card is causing the buffer level to fluctuate...the other drives on primary and secondary do fine in terms of the buffer level...

so since I know its the HD on the Controller Card..what can I do to fix it??

  8. Figured it out..so maybe this will help someone in the future:

After defragging every drive, cleaning every drive as best as possible...it turns out that the Controller Card DRIVER needed to be updated. I update the driver on it and now the HD on the controller card gets faster transfer speeds than my HD's on my primary IDE. Now, I need to figure out how to speed up the HD's on my primary IDE. I tried updating all the drivers on them, but none needed updating. Everything is working great now, but I wish I could speed up the transfer rate on my primary HD's.
