  1. I got the Snazzi MPEG1/vcd encoder anyway almost all full movie I record requires two CD to fit.

a while ago I read an article that there's a way to rip a DVD movie to fit on a single CD with near DVD video/audio quality using ASF or MPeg4 compression.

I got 900 meg VCD movie recorded. What's the best way to convert it to a format that takes less HD space and still maintain near original quality of the file?

btw: I don't care about being able to play on set top boxes, just smaller file size and playback on PC

the fartherest I got was using Windows Media Encoder 7. I converted a sample MPEG1 file to 368k stream and it took only 1/4 of the file size but the quality is noticably worst.

I next tried converting to 768k. the converted file is half the size of the original MPEG1. quality is slightly poorer compared to mpeg1.

anyone have another method of getting higher compression with miniminal quality loss?

my goal is to try to fit 4 hours of VCD quality video to a single CD.

windows Media encoder produces *.WMV files.

can someone bring me upto date on ASF files and MPG4 and DiVx?

thanks in advance for your help

  2. There are several different versions of Mpeg-4 (Divx) encoders. Windows Media 7 or 8 is not Mpeg-4 or Divx, but a new compression that MS is pushing. MS is "claiming" that a 600Kbits/sec stream is DVD quality, but that is not the case! To get a 2 hour movie on one CD, you need to operate around 600 to 800Kb/s. Next, you need to play with frame rate, video size, and encoder.

  3. You can't get 4 hours on one cd. At VCD resolution and quality, you can't really get much more than two hours on a cd without HORRIBLE losses of motion...

  4. I can settle for 2 hours per CD.

I"m not too concern about actual file format, asf,divix,etc..

I hear that DIVIX have high compression ratios and yet maintian good a/v quality. was hoping to find a way to convert my VCD to divix so I can put full length movie in a cd with as less quality loss as possible.

  5. The Divx 3 alpha has high motion and low motion settings. The low motion setting compress 2 hours movie to about 600-700MB. The quality is better than VCDs.

The high motion setting compress 2 hours movies to about 200-300MB but the quality is poorer than VCDs.

The latest Divx4.01 has overall better quality and have 4 major options to compress movies. Try them out to see the quality and the file sizes. I'm sure one of those Divx setting would just fit what you need.
