I used to have no problems capturing video on my MSI Ti-4200 (8x) card. Using Windows ME
I recently upgraded my OS to windows XP pro I have now gone to use my capture card but am having major problems (I have installed all the latest XP updates)
I firstly tried to use MSI Intervideo winproducer that came with my card. I used to use it before. It's pretty crap but does the job, but that just constantly crashes.
I then tried Pinnacle studio 8 (which also used to work before XP but I never used it) but that just came up "Capture Error" all the time.
I then decided to use VirtualDub but that reported an error that "My capture device was already in use"
After Trawling the Net I found a soloution to that
I was now able to go into the capture screen and get a preiview up (pinnacle still doesnt work though).Run the registry editor, and go to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VfWWDM Mapper, right-click it, select "Permissions" from the context menu. Deny "Full Control" to everyone, including the system itself. This forces the VfW-WDM-wrapper to rebuild its list of devices every time it is used, which fixes a situation where the system claims your capture device is already in use, when it clearly isn't.
I then followed some guides on this site to capture with VDub, but when it came to setting the 'Custom Video Format' anything I set it to (other than the default 640x480 - UYVY) came back as an unsuported format!!
Also I only had the DIVX or XVID codec available even though I had just installed the PICVideo MJPEG & Huffyuv codecs.
I then tried VirtualVCR. Following a guide on here to set it up I came across problems in Settings/ Devices/ Video Capture Pin - The Video Standard is set to NTSC_M and I can't change it (I need PAL_I) and I cant select any of the recomended resolutions. Also I still cant see the MJPEG or Huffyuv codecs (although there is a bigger list on this)
I was origonally using the WDM 1.08 driver (Because of the macrovision issue) but have upgraded to the latest version 2.20 but it makes no difference.
I don't seem to have a problem capturing (although I havn't had a chance to test it properly yet, I just cant seem to be able to set it to the required resolution or format.
Can anyone help?

Hmmm... dunno if I can be of much help, since I don't use XP (Win98SE), although we have similar cards (Pixelview Ti4200/128/AGP4x).
Have you tried upgrading DirectX to version 9.0b? (XP comes with 9.0 if I'm not mistaken).
You can also try unistalling COMPLETELY your current WDM drivers (perhaps even your graphics drivers... there's a little proggie helping you completely unistalling nVidia drivers... I think it's called "Detonator Destroyer" or something like that. It comes with instructions).
After uninstalling, check in the Device Manager for the following elements:- nvidia WDM A/V Crossbar
- nvidia WDM TV audio crossbar
- nvidia WDM TV Tuner
- nvidia WDM Video capture (universal)
D/L the latest WDM and GeForce4 drivers from nVidia's site (hopefully ensuring compatibility with Dx9.0b) and install them (card first, then WDM .. reboot in between).
As for VDub, it uses VFW for capturing, an old technology which I think is not supported anymore in XP (I think XP only support WDM). There's a wrapper somewhere, trying to map WDM to VFW (or vice versa) but it doesn't seem to work for everyone [Btw, for the Win98SE a similar mapper seems to be included inside nVidia's official GeForce drivers].
From what I hear & read, iuVCR and/or VirtualVCR seem to be peoples' choices for capturing in XP.
Best regards (and good luck). -
I am currently using Direct X 9.0b and everything checks out OK in DXdiag.
As for removing drivers and stuff I have done that (XP allows you to completely remove drivers and replace them with other ones) I have since tried using the wdm drivers that came on the CD with my card but that made no difference.
Thanks for the sugestions though.
