I'm using the following method to convert DVD to SVCD:
Smartripper -> DVD2AVI -> VFAPI -> Virtualdub w/vobsub filter -> TMPGEnc
My problem is that I can't get vobsub to give me the subtitle track that has ONLY the subtitles that appear in a few scenes of the movie when an alien speaks in his own language. I can get the track that has english subtitles all the way throughout the movie, but that's not what I want. I want to make a SVCD that shows the movie just as it would play on the DVD in normal playback without the selection of a subtitle. Has anyone successfully made a SVCD rip of this movie?
Thanks for your help in advance.

If you ripped with smartripper then there should be an xxxinfo.txt file that lists all the audio and subtitle tracks. You've chosen the wrong subtitle language track.
It's hard to say which track you need to choose (eg. in Traffic it's the french track to only get english subs when they speak in spanish).
So all I can say is try each one, you can use source range to skip around to check more quickly. -

This is what my vts_06_INFO.txt says:
***************
* Stream Info *
***************
Stream[001] X=[[0xE0] Video NTSC 720x480] [] [] [] []
Stream[002] X=[[0x80] Audio English AC3(6Ch) 48kHz Normal Caption] [] [] [] []
Stream[003] X=[[0x81] Audio English AC3(2Ch) 48kHz Normal Caption] [] [] [] []
Stream[004] X=[[0x82] Audio Français AC3(2Ch) 48kHz Normal Caption] [] [] [] []
Stream[005] X=[[0x83] Audio English AC3(2Ch) 48kHz Normal Caption] [] [] [] []
Stream[006] X=[[0x20] Subtitle English ] [] [] [] []
Stream[007] X=[[0x21] Subtitle English Normal Caption] [] [] [] []
Stream[008] X=[[0x22] Subtitle Français Normal Caption] [] [] [] []
Stream[009] X=[[0x23] Subtitle English Normal Caption] [] [] [] []
Stream[010] X=[[0x??] Others] [] [] [] []
I can't really make out what the significance of what's in here. Perhaps you can help me. And what's the difference between "Subtitle English" and "Subtitle English Normal Caption"?
================================================== ==========
This is what vobsub says:
00 - English
01 - English
02 - English
03 - English
04 - Francais
05 - Francais
06 - English
07 - English
What's weird is that only 00 - English and 01 - English have subtitles. They are however of the kind that shows all through the movie, not the kind that is only in a few selected scenes like I'd prefer. The rest of the subtitle tracks, including the two french ones, don't show anything when I preview the movie.
Can you make sense of what is amiss here? Once again, I ask is there anyone who has successfully ripped The Phantom Menace to SVCD using Vobsub? THX

I know this is irrelevent to the method you are using, but have you tried DVDx 1.6 ? or FlaskMPG with the Panasonic Encoder ? they both support subtitles, and are much "painless" to use then all those progrma you are using combined, they are just one program only.

Yes, I would suggest using FlaskMPEG for subtitled movies as it is simply much more convenient (get the newest 0.6 "subtitled fixed" version).
You can simply try out each of the the subtitle streams and scroll through the movie to see if it is the correct one.
As for the stream info you posted, the first two english subtitle are probably the standard English one and the "Hearing impaired" one. The one you are looking for is probably the last one.
