  1. I've tried several web searches but haven't come up with any answers. Can I upgrade an HP notebook DVD/CDRW drive such that it can read my DVD+RW disks (Memorex 4x; written on an MSI DR4-A)? My desktop and Panasonic DVD player have no problems at all.

The HP site isn't very useful (only BIOS updates, nothing about the drive).

Would a DVD-RW disk have a high chance of being compatible? Would a DVD+R or DVD-R disk be different?

    Thanks!

Download DVDInfo Pro and install it in your laptop....that will tell you more info about the drive than anything.

Many not-so-recent DVD ROM drives fail to read +R(W) media, especially the notebook (slim) versions.

Even my venerable Pioneer 116 seems to go through hick-ups before it reads any + media.

For such drives, I've noticed a better hit-rate with -RW disks. Most read -R as well.

Upgrading the drive on the laptop seems to be one of the most difficult tasks, as each model comes with their own mounting/interface requirements.

Best of luck with a -R(W) disk.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  4. My HP notebook has a Toshiba SD-R2212 CD-RW/DVD combo that plays both formats (the SD-R2312 does it too)

Changing its firmware to regionfree was a piece of cake
