    Hi
Hope someone can throw some light on this weird prob.....(or have I forgotten something really stupid)
Every time I try to open a file in MMC1.4 / Tempec / WM9 I get the file std windoze file open dlg, and can navigate to folders on my system ok UTILL I pick a folder that have got avi files in (divx/xvid)
Upon dbl-clicking said folder the cpu usage of the app shoots to 99% and takes ages to display the contents of the folder (MMC1.4 being the slowest - about 2mins )
    HELP any ideas .

    backround.......
    Clean format/install of w2k (sp4)
then installed following (which were all installed before)
    Zonealarm pro 3
    AVG 6 (anti viri)
    latest DX9
    ati display drivers
    Office xp
    powerdvd xp (5)
    nero 5.5.10.42
    ac3filter
    MMC1.4
only codec's I installed are the ones I've always used i.e. xvid, divx 32, divx5 and ms mp4.2/4.3/4

reason for fresh install - something fu*k#d my system,
I had been happily encoding and burning to vcd/dvd using MMC1.4 / Tempec / TDA / nero for years/months untill one day last week my system would freeze compleatly when trying to convert ANYTHING, even a wav - mp2 would lock up system. (odd but I know of 2 other ppl that this has happend to - & no have not shared any files)
So I bit the bullet and decided it was time to start afresh.

  2. I read somewhere in these forums that AVI's can cause problems when opening. DO a search for it. I tried and got way too many replies. I think it was a windows support page downloadable patch or something like that.

  3. Which file view options are you seeing in those file open boxes, thumbnail view? To speed up things and make it easier on my drives I don't use thumbnail view. If you open Windows Explorer and the folder containing those divx files and set the folder options to 'detail view' with a simple click or two, your diaglog boxes will display it also. This will probably end your long waiting period you have.

I would say you have at least one problem file in that folder that Windows is having trouble reading, but I wouldn't know.

    Good luck.

  4. There was a bug in a win2k/xp update that caused this problem, fixed in later updates I believe. Make sure you have all the latest service packs and updates.

    Cheers for the input.
    thumbnail view?
I have already disabled this function in 'folder options - use windows classic folders & desktop.

Strange - all the files will play ok (and without delay) if I dbl click to play them or use 'drag n drop'

Never seen this problem b4 and the previous set up was as upto date as current set up
starting to think windows update might be trashing something (clutching at straws I know) gonna uninstall updates and try again.

    Any more ideas welcome.

Umm, a clean install with no updates is the opposite of what bugster suggested

There is also a registry hack available somewhere. What's happening is Winblows is scanning each file before allowing you to select them. This actually should cause Windows Explorer to use a lot of your CPU, but if you give it long enough it'll eventually show up. This is the same problem that causes some AVI files to lock and not allow you to move or delete them saying that the file is currently in use even though there are no apps open. I think there was a Windows update for it but it may have been an XP only fix. The registry hack was for both versions I believe.
