Is there any way to increase the ripping speeds of a DVD? My SOny 4x writer and my HP 2.4x writer only rip at 2.0x yet in my laptop, my 1x dvd writer rips at 5.8x.
Can anyone explain this? Or moreover, explain if I can increase the speeds?
The laptop dvd is MUCH older than the new SOny I have
Thanks

oh yeah
a DVD R or a DVD with dual layer can't be ripped at more than 6x as the DVD ROM doesn't support this
only an original DVD ROM disc which hasn 't been recorded using a normal DVD burner...can b e read at 16x -
I believe some newer burners have "governors" on the ripping speed in order to make them less efficient at ripping (the DVD retailers don't want people ripping, can't stop it but can make it harder). My much older DVD-ROM on my old 1 GHz rips twice as fast as my relatively newer Pioneer 104 or 105 burners. I can see why Sony would care since they make money from selling retail DVDs, Don't know why Pioneer would care, except to be good corporate neighbors.

Hi,
I have a SONY 510a burner, which is fairly slow at ripping. From the Sony site I downloaded a small tool which increases reading (ripping) speeds. I'm not sure whether one is available for your Sony model, but I sggest you check the Sony site for such a tool. -
frankb, thanks
Do you remember what it was called? The program? Or where it was located? -
Hi bari (or should I call you tony?),
Here is the link to the DSS program fpr the Sony 510a:

Please note that this might not work for your particular type of burner, so browse this site for downloads that are right for your burner!
Hope this helps. -
Wonderful! Thanks!
I am now ripping at 7.9x!

I don't suppose there's a tool like that for NEC drives?

ripping with my Sony dwu10a was so bad at about 1.2 speed max that i went and got a lite on 16 speed dvd/cd writer just to rip! it's much better - not as good as above but i get about 6.3 with it
