  1. Ok, heres the deal. I have a sony surround unit. It plays damn near all surround modes that are popular right now (ie dts, ac3 DD). But, if I convert something from mpeg and put it on dvd the unit says MPEG on the front and won't play it very well...it will cut in and out and I don't get a center channel. I can't even get it to play a fake center channel like some surround units can. (my dads does)

I want to find out if I can convert the audio from mpeg to something else...ac3 or dts, even if its basically a false conversion.

  2. You can convert mpeg to Ac3 (2.0 channels).

Besweet will do this for free but the Ac3 file is not 100% compliant. If you want 100% compliance you will need to spend money on a commercial encoder. Several DVD authoring packages now include Ac3 encoders. Search the tools section for help finding what you need.
