I am relatively new to video conversion so here goes.

I was looking for a piece of s//w that is able to split mkv movies into 2 slices so I can convert them into 2 dvd5 without losing PQ.

I was recommended to try " Any Video Converter "

So I tried "Any Video Converter" and it works quite well . Its easy to use . My only problem is that I cannot get the preview pane to work so I split the movie by time.

However the result is quite surprising to me. Original movie was .mkv 720p . x264 with run time approx 117 mins . File size 8.5G . I split the clip into 2 parts 55 min and 52 mins . Converted both using Any Video Converter into mpeg for DVD . The result is 2 video clips at 1.7G and 1.9G size . I expected the movie clips to be much larger . Any idea why ? I could have converted the movie directly using DVDflick into one DVD5 or use Any Video Converter without splitting the movie into two slices.

Because Any Video Converter used a lower bitrate while converting,I don't use it so maybe set to higher one....So yeah if you wish to backup to DL or SL disc then use DVDFlick..What I do with HD mkv video is use MKV2VOB or TSMuxer and either stream or burn DL or SL media to play on PS3, but that's slightly going off topic.....

A couple issues. First, the DVD spec doesn't allow for HD (ie: 720P) video, so by converting to DVD, you are reducing the quality from 720P down to 480P. Second, what exactly are you trying to do? Splitting a file across multiple discs "to preserve quality" and conversion to DVD are two different topics. If you are splitting the file to preserve quality, then you should be splitting and burning as data. If you are wanting the output in DVD format, then splitting isn't necessary. Simply convert the mkv to DVD spec mpeg2.
