If he had the cash to buy all the innards of a PC, why didn't he just go buy a second computer? If his parents would be upset if he gave back the computer, wouldn't they be more upset that he destroyed their present?

  7. Someone has more money than sense, methinks. To take an expensive, premium, top-notch thing of beauty like that and turn in into a standard PC seems is insanity. Not to mention how the person who splashed out to get him away from PCs will feel about this.

Custom PC magazine took a G4 and converted it into a PC too.

Someday, when I can afford one, I want a Mac. By that time, it'll be a G20 people are doing this to, by the looks of things just now (thanks to Mr. Blair and his cronies)........

that is really sick .... those things are not cheap and imagine how the parents worked 3 jobs to buy that thing for him ...

    If it was my kid:

    1. i would have known right away - looking at the key logger logs..

    2. taken it away and get old parts back ... and use it myself ..

    3. make kid buy his own system - with money he/she earned themsleves..

    4. quit extra job ...

That isn't even PC standard, that moron used a mini board. We are talking a generic 1.1 Ghz chip with no optimizations, on-board sound and video and a slower than hell FSB.

. I have NEVER seen a finer made case.
From what I've heard, I think the G4 case is a little more slick. We have several at work, and I really like the way it opens with no tools required. And when open, it is fairly easy to get to every part of the machine. The G5 just has the side come off right?

BTW, I'm not a Mac person either, but I can see that they have their uses too. And what that sucker did is truly foolish. For another $40 he could have just bought another case, that was small enough to hide under the desk, and just use that. Or go buy a dead G4 and gut that, don't they look very similar on the outside?

Bastard, wish I had the G5 instead of that sucker. At least I would try to learn to use it.

  19. I sell PCs and Macs. Those G5 Macs are...
    • Annoyingly heavy to move - the handles are the designer's idea of a joke
    • Annoyingly noisy - I have heard quieter hairdryers
    • Ridiculously overpriced - A fool and his money...
    • Ridiculously underspeced - Too little RAM and Harddrive space out of the box
    • Ideally suited to people who can't cope with more than one mouse button

EVERYTIME I sell one, I laugh all the way to the bank.

But back onto the topic, I find it amazing that anyone would desecrate a good computer by housing it in an aluminium cheesegrater

BMWs cost money too, but they out perform Civics and do it with style.

8GB of RAM and 500GB HD is considered low? Yeah, thats the high end, but you do get the whole range from high end to medium. Maybe you could even argue that the low end RAM is too little, but the smallest HD is actually quite large, even for the most voracious pornography connoisseur (ooh, long complicated words)

Also suited to people who can't cope with more than, two, three, four, five or even maybe a couple more mouse buttons. But yes, Macs are easy enough to use with any amount of buttons. But, that sounds like more of a plus on the Mac side.

I believe you mean "The worlds most expensive cheese grater"

EDIT: I meant it to be funny up until the two long points, incase that wasn't clear. Oh, and I irrationally hate Civics. Don't ask why, its irrational.
EDIT2: I have a five button Microsoft Bluetooth mouse for use with my BT enabled powerbook. Incase anybody cares.
If it isn't broken, take it apart and find out why.

I find it extremely humorous when people try to justify the one button mouse.

    It's absolutely horrible.

Well, there are many reasons why it is good that a one button mouse is standard. It is not the best mouse to use in many cases, as I've noted, I don't use a one button mouse. But, (which I think is the most important point) it forces the DEVELOPERS to pretend that every mac user has a one button mouse. That means that generally, there is nothing in the control-click menu that isn't available elsewhere. I do feel that this, and many other effects of the one button mouse are a bonus to the mac platform.

Would I ever use a one button mouse on my own computer? No. But, do I feel that it is an advantage to have developers design for a single mouse button? Hell yeah!

That being said, I hate it when people always bring up the one-mouse-button argument. Macs have had multibutton mouse support since like system 8.

I already have membership to a gym, perhaps I should use it.

Joking aside, some of my early G5 display models sounded like restroom hand dryers. I had to crank up the volume on the rolling demo just so I could hear Jonathan Ive say how much quieter the G5 was.

As far as specs go, Apple shipping some G5 models with only 256Mb or 512Mb installed is a joke.

I don't deny the G5 is a fine machine. On the otherhand, Apple's quality control, standard spec and pricing policy leave a lot to be desired.

For the record, if I had been lucky enough to receive a G5 as a gift I'd have installed Final Cut on it, filled the memory slots, put a proper size hard drive in it, bought some earplugs and lived with it.

I've heard the "G5 is loud" thing before, but I've never actually experienced it. I assume only some of the machines are affected by this noise issue, 'cause my friends G5 Dual 2 is whisper quiet.

And the RAM, yeah, they could crank it up to a Gig (seems to be the breakpoint on OS X) but really, people can buy that elsewhere, often cheaper. All I know is that my G5 is gonna have 1-2 gigabytes, funds permitting .

Regarding the harddrives however, you're just simply incorrect. The lowend G5 has by default an 80GB drive, which I would list on the small side of medium. The default of 160GB on the other two models is not considered small, on PC, Mac, Linux, Solaris, SGI, or any other system you can think up. If, however, you do require a large amount of space, you can upgrade to half a terabyte, which is a very large amount, more than you really would need to have internal on a computer. I also seem to remember one of your points being the price of a Macintosh computer. I don't see how you can reasonably say this computer is expensive, when you want to make it MORE expensive by changing all the defaults. Options are there, in case you need them. If you don't, you get a break on the price. Many people don't need to 250GB HD, nor the extra RAM. Maybe we can just agree to disagree, but you're still wrong. :P

The demo G5 arent a very good example. The clear window mabob makes it noisier, and the constant on without care(dust and such) makes it noisier. I have to dust off the inside of my G5 once a month.

  27. I am definently not a mac user. In fact I think I have only used a mac maybe twenty times at the most. But if I was given a G5 as a gift, I would sure learn fast. I don't like the 1 mouse button thing, but that can be fixed (I think I have seen macs with more than one mouse button).

If I had the money I would buy a mac.
I really do like the way they look. And I love those huge Apple LCD screens.

I am not quite ready to venture into apple territory, I am just now setting up dual boot Linux.

I have a 5 button mouse. Come on people... ANY usb mouse works on a mac. heck i have a logitech wireless one that all i had to do was plug in the base and turn the mouse on. no drivers nothing!

it really makes me wonder if apple put 2 button mice on thier macs if sales would tripple! apparently the mouse is a touchy issue when it comes to those pc'ers buying a mac
