    Issue arround "black level" was for me mostly related to DVD Recorders and especialy to old Panasonic model until dawillie posted one link. Based on that link it seems that problems with black level can point to your MiniDV camcorder too. So check this out and see if this can be reason why you feel that colors are not right when you record from MiniDV.
