  1. Is there a tool which will allow me to `cut` some of an MP3 off?

I have an MP3 file, which is 6mins long, but only 4mins is actually audio.

    Help appreciated!!

  2. There's a tiny app called mp3Trim which would do the job for you.

    It's simple and free.

    Here's the homepage for mp3Trim.

    cheers,

I dont' know if there is a tool to do that. But there are plenty that you can use to convert MP3 to WAV and then cut it. CDex converts MP3 to WAV and the other way around. For cutting you should be able to use Sound recorder in Windows or check the Tools section for more advanced tools.

There are some apps (such as the ones we've recommended above) that can cut mp3's directly. It's worth doing this, rather than decoding, editing and re-encoding, as you'll lose quality with every re-encode (just like in video).

  7. Get Audacity. It allows you to cut/remove fade in/out. It handles very large files as well. I used it to extract songs out of an hour long MP3 stream.

  8. Thanks guys, I`ll get all the tools suggested, see which I prefer.

    Cheers!

  9. trossin - the only thing about using Audacity is that I don't think it will be able to keep the files in mp3 format. I think it would have to decode before editing, and then re-encode again.

mp3Trim can do fades & normalisation etc.. as well at cutting; and the file stays as mp3 all the way through (apparently).

    mcdruid.

  10. Audacity - Easy to use once Lame MP3 Encoder (.dll) was installed, straight forward!

MP3Trim, a little more confusing, it asked me how much of the MP3 to trim from the end, so I told it...... 2:37secs, somehow it decided to cut more and left me with 1:09 of the MP3!

    AUDACITY for me then!!

Again, thanks for the help people! Appreciated!

  11. Xile2003 - I'm glad you found a solution that worked for you.

I'm going to sound like a broken record here but...

Audacity is areally good audio editor (especially for freeware!).

BUT if you use that to trim your mp3's, then you're decoding them, editing them, and then re-encoding then (with LAME).

Doing it this way, you will lose quality as the file is re-encoded (just like if you re-encode video).

Strictly speaking, you're better off using something like mp3Trim which can edit the mp3 directly, without the need for de-coding and re-encoding.

    cheers,
    mcdruid.

  13. What if you have a hour long MP3 that you want to split into tracks? Will either of these work? I have a concert DVD that I decoded with DVD decrypter then converted the AC3 to MP3 with the AC3 converter.

  14. Yes they'll work - if you can get the timings off the DVD, use a player to find the exact points at which you want to split, then use mp3Trim.

Alternatively, you could try using mp3splt (not a typo - the i is missing) - which only has a commandline interface, but is an excellent tool for splitting up albums etc.. There's a silence/threshold mode which might split your concert up for you unless the audience is too noisy between tracks!

    Good luck.
