  1. I have a LEADTEK WINFAST "DELUXE" TV2000XP capture card. I have lots of moves on VHS that I would like to capture with the card to burn to dvd. Can someone tell me what are the best settings and capture software to use to capture a movie to burn the dvd that looks great? Here are my system specs

    Althon XP 2400+
    512 MB RAM
    128MB TI 4200 video card.
    Windows XP pro
    Windows 2000 Pro

Your setup is pretty similar to mine, minus XP (yuck:P).

Anyway, i have found the stuff you get with the card, albeit a lot of nice software, pretty useless for capturing. I now only use the winfast loader thing to watch tv, i have captured stuff with it but i did have sync problems with vhs stuff, so i looked for something else. Virtual dub seemed upto the job, was ok, but still slight sync problems from vhs. In the end i have tried all sorts of free software and have settled on Virtual VCR being the best, havent seen a sync problem yet, its been great, so check it out.

I have the Leadtek, but I use 98. One problem with Vdub is it will require a wrapper and tweaked BT878 drivers (won't work in 98) to work at full resolution (which may not be much of a problem with vhs). I capture my vhs with the included Winfast PVR using the huffy codec at 480x480. PVR will chop my files when they get too big for 98 and continue to record. I then filter them in Vdub and edit and add titles... in Ulead VS 7 SE (included). I also use Ulead to burn to svcd. I could not get Ulead to capture in mpeg2. So if you plan on editing, you should capture to .avi, but if you just want to copy, then go straight to DVD. Try using DVD factory (included) or VS 7.
I probably could have skipped the Vdub step since many my tapes were in good condition, but I liked the results of the vhs filter for tapes that had some noise.

  4. your setup should be good.

i have that card and use virtualvcr.

i could cap 3 hours of mjpeg (setting 19) 640 x 480 (i think, not on my cap machine atm) avi file to a partition on my hard drive (My OS, windows XP, was on a partition on the same drive) and not drop one frame, except if there was a physical problem with the tape.

    i have
    Duron 1ghz
    512 sdram
    64mb geforce 2 video card

the only reason i cant now is a problem that i am unsure of that arrived when my hard drive died and i bought a new one, now i drop 2-3 frames per hour, but it isn't noticeable.

You should check your settings (if you havent already) in my computer properties, make sure that new hardrive is set to DMA and not PIO. I've noticed XP and Win2k set the new drive to PIO sometimes for no apparent reason.

  6. what setting/compression are you guys using in virtualvcr to capture an hour long program that you want to burn to vcd. i know with the winfast pvr software they have a built-in setting to capture to a vcd compliant format, but i've been getting audio sync problems like other posting here. how do i mirror those settings in virtualvcr, or are there better settings? also, i tried capturing to divx using the 5.1 codec, and for a 1 minute test capture the file size was 18mb. i was thinking this codec was the best for compression to watch on pc only. i was hoping the file size would be smaller than that. any suggestions? thanks.
