  1. Hi everyone!

I just bought my dad a dvd-burner and thought I'd burn some avi-files so we could watch some movies on his dvd.

So i got Nero Express Ultra Edition and Nerovision Express and all the mpeg-codecs and stuff, and then discovered that it took about 30 hours(!) for the computer to convert half Lord of the Rings!

Is that normal? Why is it so slow? Are other programs faster?

    The computer is 600MHz /256RAM.

Happy to get some help from you guys

    /Giuseppe

  3. Alright, my dad apologizes for his computer :P

...but say he got 2500MHz, how long would it take then?

This would vary depending on what file type you are converting from and to. My XP2200+ processor system takes about 2 hours to convert an hour of DV avi at 720 x 576 to DVD format mpeg. As a rough guide, I work on twice runtime but if it is stuff that has been editted and has transitions and filters applied, it can take longer.

I recently converted Lord of the Rings i have a athlon 2900 and 512ram took me 11 hours.
it all really depends what options u chose when converting like size and stuff like that.

  6. Ok...

But are some programs significantly faster than others? For instance, this TempENGC you're talking about...how big is the difference timewise?

    Thanks for the help!

I use CCE 2.5 and depending on the quality of the source, how much I filter, etc, I can 2-pass VBR encode a 2 hour 720x480 capture in 3-4 hours. Even faster if I resize to 352x480.
