Toshiba SD-1600 - dvd -r's fail in last few chapters

Hi All, I have a Toshiba SD-1600. I have only been successful in getting it to read -r dvd's. However the problem is when the dvd gets to the last couple chapters or so.. it start freezing up .. pausing.. digital fade ( if that's what it's called)

Any Ideas why ? I have not tested whether compressing the dvd to death = less volume on the dvd works or not .. I prefer to not compress more that 10%.

oh ya.. I use lite-on 411, dvd shrink, and nero.

I thought I'd ask here if there are any solutions to this.. if not.. it dvd player shopping I go

Sounds like cheap media, or media that your player does not like. what brand(s) are you using for blank dvd's

Memorex mostly.. not sure what the others were, I borrowed a friends to confirm. I know that they weren't memorex.

Is there a brand that is reliable in this player ? they are probably more expensive also ? Considering will cost me 129 canadian for a nice prgressive scan player that does it all.. hmmm ... merry christmas to me... merry christmas to me.. lol

Are you using labels on your disk. They have been known to cause playback issues--particularly toward the end of the disk.

My opterite player does that with TDK media. It doesn't do it with RITEK media. My APEX doesn't care what I burn.

You have to match your media to your player, everyone eventually has to deal with it....

I ended up buying myself a panasonic s35k and have had absolutely no issues.

Kivas, I have the same Toshiba DVD player as you, and luckily have had no problems playing Ritek DVD-R's (it won't play -RW's). Based on the opinions/information at this great forum, I chose a Pioneer 105 burner (came with Nero Express 6), and have backed up over 50 movies on Ritek/Ridata G04 (4x) disks using DVD Shrink, with no errors. I limit the compressed file size to 4,300 MB as "insurance" against bad data burns at the edge of the disk, but from what many others here have said, the don't have any problems with Ritek disks burned to full capacity. The Toshiba is a great player, but limited in what it plays. Hope you find your problem was just bad media -- that's the easiest to fix.

Thanks for the info, my toshiba has now become my bedroom dvd player. I will keep that in mind, however I usually only watch movies on my main t.v. Has anyone ever noticed a difference in movie quality if you over compress ?

i purchased this player in dec 2000. i noticed in the manual it says not to use dvd+/-r discs in the unit, but i recently started playing them with no problems as of yet. [stupid question]can playing these in the unit harm the lpayer or discs?[/stupid question] i've tried a few dvd-r discs and a few +r discs and have had no problems.

I have just purchased a Toshiba SD2810. I have used Princo, Ritech and Imation discs. All start freezing on last couple of chapters. The only way around it is compress to about 4gig with DVD shrink 3.1 and then they work fine.
