  1. what is the smallest file output.....i.e. mpeg. I need to put a bunch of video files ( avi and mpeg) onto a dvd and need them to not use up much space....what would be the best conversion for those files.

    VCD resolution of 352x240 in mpeg1 or 2 using VBR encoding with an average video bitrate of 1000 kbps and audio bitrate of 224 kbps will get about 8 hours on a DVD. It will be acceptable quality, a little below VHS.

    1/2 DVD (mpeg2) resolution of 352x480 will be much better looking. Use an average video bitrate of 1800 to get 5 hours on a disk.

    Your choice.

    PS, you can lower the bitrate further if you need to squeeze a little more but I wouldn't go beyond 20% less in either case above.
