i encoded an avi to a vcd using the vcd template in TMPGenc then i converted it to a dat file using vcdgear from vcdhelp.com, the video looks fine on my computer, but when i record it to vhs its all messed up, in the begining it looks like the tracking is off, lines at the bottom, and the audio is not synced, there like a big gap between the person talking and hearing them talk. everything is messed up.

Here's a little suggestion. If you have a DVD player and if you have a CD writer on your computer, you could make a VCD and play it on you DVD player and record it directly to VHS tape (via a VCR, of course). I've done this before and it actually helps reduce some of the digital artifacts found on the highly compressed MPEG-1 used for VCD.
