I just bought the ADVC-100 the other day and got it hooked up to a pci firewire card. I have my Tv connected to the inputs on the front and a firewire cable hooked from the front of the unit and the other end to the pc.
When I first hooked it up, WINDV or any other dv capture software would not see it. I went to the Canopus site and their support page said to put jumper 6 from auto to manual. I did that and it XP picked up on it and everything was fine. I captured some stuff and shut the unit off.
The next day I turned the unit on and Windv did not see the device. I rebooted the pc and still no luck. I then shut the unit off and switched jumper 6 back to auto, and Windv saw it. The firewire card is a Belkin. I also tried another card that I had (Startech) thinking that it may be the card when I was first hooking up the unit. Both firewire cards are new and XP saw both.
What am I doing wrong here? Could it possibly be a bad ADVC-100?
The pc is a P4 2.6, 512k ram.

did you have the advc's input selection switch set to analog ? ( the silver push switch on the top l/h front)

One good thing, I did a Seinfeld capture with ADVC-100 from my Directv Tivo receiver, edited out the commercials and burned the show to dvd and the quality was like watching it live from Directv. I was really impressed. -
Report back with how you get on, hope you fix it

Well, so far, the same thing. Today I went to turn it on, XP made the sound that it recognized it was on, but no capture programs see it. I changed the jumper back the other way and now the capture software sees it. Really weird. It is almost like I am doing something wrong, I just don't know what.
I bought a 6 pin to 6 pin fireware cable today to see if that would help, but the problem is still there. Maybe it has something to do with XP. I think that I read somewhere in these forums that SP1 for XP can cause issues with this unit.
I also notice that the ADV-100 gets somewhat warm. Is that normal? -
when operating, the unit will get warm. This is normal and I just keep junk, etc. away from the box and power supply.
OTOH, your having to move/reset that jumper switch is not normal IMHO.
Perhaps it's time to either contact canopus support or start a return/replacement of the unit... I've had my unit for a year now and haven't had to touch any of the bottom switches since initially setting it up and it's been under xp sp1 the entire time....
I do use ScenalyzerLive s/w for capturing - as a long shot you might d/l a trial copy and see how your advc behaves with it... -
Are you using a DELL? If so check for a possible BIOS update. I could not get my ACEDVio to work on my Dell 4600 with the OEM XP svc pk 1. I formated and did a fresh install and everything fell into place.
There was a BIOS fix in the works last I checked. -
I have no issues with WinXP and SP1.
I hear this a lot but I hear double that number say they have no issues.
There's a sticky/piece on it over at the canopus ADVC-100 forum.
As for the heat I woldn't say mine was an issue, it's warm at best.

Thanks for all the input. I may just try and contact Canopus to see what they think. I am ready to send the unit back to exchange for another one, I just didn't want to jump the gun. The bios on the pc, which is a Dell 8300, is up to date.
I have another question. My pc stays on all the time. When I am done capturing, I shut the ADVC off. Now when I am ready to capture again, I turn the ADVC back on, about 20 seconds later the pc beeps that it saw it. Now how long should it take for the capture program to recognize it after XP does? I would think right away, right? I have waited up to a couple a minutes for this and it still does not see it till I switch the jumper. -
Mine is instant, within two seconds (max).
I'd go try the canopus forum, there's one guy there, canopusBH (the moderator) who's very good.
Nice guy too, like me

I have no problems with XP either. My set up works perfectly after wiping my hardrive and reinstalling everything. At first I was told it was the DELL OEM disk which made absolutely zero sense.
It seems odd that everytime I hear of one of these random connectivity problems the computer ends up being a newer DELL.
I don't know what it is exactly. My guess would be that they install some kind of monitoring software that interferees with these devices. Not spyware or anything but they put a couple programs on there PCs that facilitate remote trouble shooting and such.
I didn't take the time to narrow down exactly what was causing the conflict but when putting the software back on the PC I opted not to install any DELL "utillities" and I haven't looked back. -
Well, what I did today was turn the unit on and XP did not recognize it, so I shut the unit off then back on and XP recognized it buy making that connection sound but Sclive did not see it. I shut the unit off and then back on, XP made the connection noise and sclive did see it. I did not change the jumper switch this time, so I think that there is no correlation with that. I need to turn the unit on and off a couple of times till it works right. I will check the canopus forums. That's a good idea. Thanks
-
So far I am getting no where. I think that I am going to return the unit. I may get another one and try it all though I am a little hesitant. I don't know what else I can buy that would do a nice capture. I am thinking about going with the AIW. That is what I was going to get in the first place, but the reviews on the ADVC are so high, plus it is a dedicated capture source. Any suggestions on a different capture card?
-
Please, speak to Canopus/use the Canopus forum/exchange the unit before you give in on it.
I spent over two years with three different conventional capture cards, the last 12 months with ATI and whilst the ATOI gave me great success I would never, ever, ever go back.

Will Hay, I know what you mean, I really don't want to give up on it. I may just exchange it for another one. I went on to the Canopus forums, but it does not look like there are too many post. I did a search for the ADVC-100 but only got about 4 returns. Noting even relevant to issue's.
I can't seem to get the pc to even work with it now. I turned it off and on a couple of times, but Xp is not seeing it. Really weird. -
I had the same problem and it was not the Canopus. They wanted me to return it for testing but I doubted that it was th ADVC-100, it has much to good of a reputation. Sometimes the Canopus was recognized and sometimes not. I finally got a new 1394 board and that solved the problem. The problem board had a VIA chip in it and the one that works has an NEC chip.
Dell 4550,1gb ram,2.4ghz -
yeah, echoing the last message, it could just be a problem with your firewire card.. try another card. if you have no luck with that either, then you can think about getting the canopus looked at/replaced..

I have been following this thread with interest - as I have been 'living' with the same problem.
Same as you lzicc, I haven't found much in the way of others sharing this problem (as described) on the Canopus forums or anywhere else.
Given that I have been trying similar things, I recently came to the same thought - that this is likely a firewire/operating system relation. In my case, I run Windows 2000 Professional. But my computer was put together by myself using Intel motherboard and P4.
The firewire card I am suspicious of - and am seriously thinking of changing it.
Do a search (like I am about to) as I think that folks here have mentioned something about the type of chips involved on the card as being the likely culprit of (yours and my) problem.Whatever doesn't kill me, merely ticks me off. (Never again a Sony consumer.) -
I have 2 new fireware cards that I tried. The one is a Belkin and the other is a Startech. I had the same problem with both cards. What is so weird is sometimes it works when I first turn it on, and sometimes it don't. I really doubt that it is a ADVC issue, but I could be wrong.
What is a recomended firewire card to use with the ADVC? I will by it just to get it working right and get past this issue.
Another thing to note on this is that when Xp does recognize it along with the capture software, it works flawlessly. It don't cut out or anything like that. That is what makes me think that it is not the unit.
Here is a link to a similar issue:

Granted - this is a confusing issue. Particularly since so few folks seem to have this problem as you and I do.
Nevertheless, here is what I found recently through the forums here.

Yet they seem to go back and forth about if the problem is a T.I. chipset or VIA. In one case within these threads, DELL laptop/system is mentioned as having the problem within the built-in firewire section on the motherboard.
At this point, I am inclined to think this is a quality/standards (lack of) on the part of the manufacturers of the firewire itself.
I also agree it is not likely the Canopus.Whatever doesn't kill me, merely ticks me off. (Never again a Sony consumer.) -

I suupose the 'proof in the pudding' would be to try the ADVC-100 on a friend's machine (a friend's machine with firewire obv.).
With regards the TI and VIA chipset, I've never heard of it with VIA (this was an issue with capturing and the BUS hogging but not firewire) but I understand from the Canopus forum the TI is a dead issue anyway, it was related to much older TI chipsets.
Again, there's a piece on it specifically on the forum.
Good luck

Just got off the phone with Canopus tech support. He said that there are certain drivers that ship with Dell that can cause this issue. He emailed me the drivers and when I get home I will try it out and post to let you guys know if it fixed it or not. Support also said that it has nothing to do with a faulty firewire card which helps me rule that out anyhow.
If this works and anyone needs the drivers for their Dell, I would be happy to email them to you. Or I can post them on this site if someone can tell me where to post them. -
I am not feeling real good about what Canopus suggested. I remoted into my home pc and noticed that the files that Canopus emailed me have the same time stamp and are the same size as the ones it is replacing. I can't test it from here, but I don't feel real good about it. I will let you know.

You think you got problems?
I'm 33 tomorrow

Well ... whether you realize it or not ... to do an experiment correctly ... you have to control the varibles.
You did 2 things that I see ... starting with your original post.
You changed the jumper and turned it off.
You should have tried just turning off the computer and then powering back up again.
I have the ADVD 50 ... when it doesn't come on ... rebooting wont help.
I have to actually shut off my computer ... the ADVC 50 is plugged into a PCI slot and so is my Belkin FireWire.
Oh my god ... shut my computer off ... geez ... it usually runs 24/7. LOL
But when I get no picture ... I shut it down and then count to 30 and turn it back on. And I'm ready to capture.
Another thing too ... the connections need to be plugged in too ... sometimes ... I found the S-VHS plug had wiggled loose. -

I did try turning the pc off and then back on with different senarios. It didn't seem to matter. Then for a couple of days there I would not move the jumper switch and just power cycle the unit, so I don't think the jumper switch made any difference. I will know more when I get home and actually see if replacing those files helped. I really doubt it though.
BTW. Congratulations. That is something to be proud of.
