Bear in mind that only a handful of these drives are unique. The rest are relabels. But you knew that, right?

NEC, HP, Liteon, LG, Pioneer, Optorite - they all make their own burners.

Most of the others do not... including Plextor nowadays.

Sure do. Do you know which ones are unique and which ones are relabled? I've already stated some are (might be) relabeled like the Buffalo drive, I-O Data, and Speerdata.

You're right, that's why I supplied the links (infos, reviews).

Please note that I did not intend for this list to be some sort of a comparison chart.

  9. According to this thread, the Sony DRU530A is a rebadged Optorite. Can anyone confirm this?

  10. inless you don't have one yet why bother fulling with the 8x writers when they will be dual layer burners just around the corner.

  11. When dual layer DVD burners come out, I will start another, appropriately-titled thread. :P

  12. Also might want to mention TDK 840G is a rebadged Plextor 708A. BTW, dual layer has a while to go and I would not count on it replacing 8x burners for quite some time.

Sold out. So links to sales are kind of pointless. But fatwallet.com Hot deal forum usually has links. for the latest sales, that might work better.

    Staples: TDK 8x Dual format:
    " Item #554434, on sale at $199.94 - $30 of $150 coupon (99083) - $40 MIR = $129.94.

That too was only last week; if only they kept them up longer for us.

  14. @sidewinder33625,
Thanks for the info on the TDK drive. Added info to the list.

    @handyguy,
That's pretty cheap for an 8x dual format drive.

  15. The LG GSA-4080B and the GSA-4081B are identical. The 4081B just has a newer firmware. I work for a computer distributor and we are direct with most of these manufacturers. Currently, we have the NEC, Plextor, Optorite, LG and MSI in the 8x models. Still waiting for the new Pioneer.....

  17. We are getting the Pioneer 107/A07 drives in within the next 2 weeks. I'm planning on getting one of these, so I'll keep you guys up to date on my experiences with it.

  18. Check out the side-by-side comparison of the Pioneer A07 and NEC 2500A. It seems to indicate that the A07 reads DVD-RAM at 2x max speed.

TheNooblet, when you get your A07/107, can you verify this?

    Thanks!

Having just checked the site it's nearer £93
Very tempting but I'm just drawn to Pioneer drives (even though my current x1 speed Panasonic DVD-R/RAM has been flawless).

  21. Base on this thread, I'll note it above that the I-O Magic and Magic Spin 8x drives are rebadged Optorite DD0401 drives.

Also added above: Sony DRU-530A review @ cdrlabs.com

Lastly, added info on the LG GSA-4081B drive.

  27. FYI, not all Spin Magic drives are rebadged Optorite. The one that bunker bought at CompUSA was made by Top Glory Electronics.

PM from bunker (reproduced here with his permission)

CompUSA has a sale on the drive right now and it is not an Optorite. I originally bought it from Microcenter for $180 last week and it was the optorite. Microcenter wouldn't price match compUSA's price in this past Sunday's ad so I went and bought it from CompUSA.

When I opened the compusa drive it looked completely different from the one bought at MC. The new drive still said MagicSpin on the label, but the manufacturer is Top Glory Electronics. I posted this in a review about the I/O Magic drive.
