  1. I'm at my wits end here...

I recently bought a Pioneer DVR-A06U DVD-RW and installed it. After many problems I noticed the system requirements were more than I had, so I went and upgraded my motherboard (ECS L4VXA2) and added a Pentium 4 2.66GHz chip. So of course I had to get a new 300w power supply, and then my RAM wasn't compatible, so I bought a PNY 512MB strip.

I have a hard drive and a zip drive on one IDE port, and a CD-Rom and the DVD-RW on the other port. Now here's my problem, whenever the DVD-RW is connected in the chain I get an error messege. If I disconnect just the DVD everything is fine. I've even tried just connecting the DVD and hard drive... nothing. I've changed IDE ports and also set the DVD drive to master and slave. I'm running Win98SE.

Here is the error messege I'm getting:

An exception 06 has occured at 0028:000001B in VxD --- This was called from 0028:C023AC79 in VxD ---.

Then when I try to continue I get this:

A fatal exception 0E has occured at 015F:0000663D. The current application will be terminated.

Like I said, I'm ready to set fire to this computer or put my foot through it. I just thought I'd try here before spending more $ for a real tech to fix it for me. Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers.

Sounds like a psu problem, try at least a 400 w psu with at least 18amps on the 12volt rail, the listing of the amps are on the side of the psu.Having a good quality power supply is often neglected when other parts are replaced. Also overheating can cause vxd errors.

  3. vxd errors usually mean driver issues.

    Do a google search.

note: I got that same error with my video capture card using win98

  4. I don't think it's the power supply because I had the drive somewhat running with a 250W PSU before the upgrade.

I actually did a Google search for the VxD error code but couldn't find anything useful. (nothing for that specific error)

Do you think the DVD writer is bad?

    Thanks.

  5. When you bought all this new stuff did you do a clean install of the operating system or did you just plug your HD in a hope for the best?

  6. At first I hoped for the best, then I did a reinstall of Win98SE. I couldn't wipe the drive clean so I guess it was an overwrite install.

    Updated the motherboard drivers too.

Not sure if this helps but, when I startup in #4 mode (step-by-step setup) it gets all the way to: msmouse.vxd [Enter=Y, Esc=N] Then when I hit ENTER, I get the error message.
