I'd be dancing in the streets if my dvd-rom burned that fast. You should be happy with that speed...

that link for the firmware you put in there, the firmware for my dvd drive only makes it reigion free not rip faster.
also is there any way to compress a movie faster, it takes 40-60 min usually -
ripping speed depends on several factors. If you have of these then you rip time should only be around 20 minutes or less.
-Fast DVD rom
-Fast CPU i.e. 2.6Ghz with about 512MB Ram
-Hard drive that is able to read/write/transfer fast. ATA 100
-The "skinny" 80 pin IDE cable instead of the older one. This is allow you read to boost your transfer rate double.
-Set your IDE to use DMA instead of PIO. This also helps alot. The setting cahnge be changed under Device manager in Windows 2000. -
Sox,
16X is the absolute fastest your DVD drive will rip the outer edge of an unencrypted DVD given perfect conditions in a vacuum
Practically, there are many factors which affect DVD ripping speeds. For almost all commercial DVDs, anywhere between 4x and 8x as an average across the entire disc is considered good to very good. This translates to between 10 and 20 minutes per DVD. I would seriously doubt if anyone could get their DVD-ROM to average rip speeds of 10x or more consistently across a number of DVDs.
I can't answer your compression question as I do not know what program you are using to compress with. DVDShrink normally takes around 20-30 mins to encode depending on the length of the film but this can blow out a bit if deep analysis is done.
DVD backup was never meant to be possible to the average joe so be thankful we can do it at all !
There are many different methods out there to backup DVDs, but you must expect to wait somewhere between 30 mins and an hour at the minimum. It just isn't possible to go any quicker just yet.If in doubt, Google it.
