  1. Hello,
I really would like to make an archive of my CD collection in mp3 format onto DVD+R,RW. Is this achievable to begin with? I mean I've burned a couple copies and only my pc's will recognize them thus far! Are there any techniques to enable compatibility amongst DVD players? Are there any alternatives anybody may know of to put albums to DVD+R,RW's ? Any advice greatly appreciated!

Please let me share my experience about this.
Modern dvd players that are compatible with recorded CDR/RW, will recognise mp3 (and other compressed audio formats) burned onto CDR/RW in straight ISO format. When it comes to recorded DVD media, this is NOT the case.

In order to play MP3s on a recorded dvd, you need a new breed of DVD players -- DIVX dvd players. By design, these players *have* to be able to handle media files recorded onto DVDR/W or CDR/W. My momitsu V880 can thus play DIVX, MP3, AVI and other files stored in a proper ISO file structure.

Note: Since DIVX is not officially sanctioned by the hardware consortiums and mainstream manufacturers, the support of mp3 playback on dvdr may not be a top priority of the major manufacturers.

  3. I sort of thought that there would be issues (afterwards) regarding what stand alone DVD players would be able to read mp3 data from a DVD disc. Since this is not really an option to consider any longer, are there other means to place as many albums as possible, on DVD and still have playback on stand alone players? I thought there was an article somewhere about doing this. I would like to put as many albums as possible on a single disc. While still retaining playback quality, What format would the audio have to be put into to get a good number of albums onto a DVD(+R,RW in my case)? Tell me there is a way of still doing this project, - please!! -SSF-

  5. You could encode to 2ch Ac3 then author a DVD-Video with still pictures for video (very low bitrate, takes up very little space) and your Ac3 as the audio. Will then play in ALL DVD players.

Sorry but this is wrong. It is true that there are many DVD players that will not play mp3's on DVD media, but there are also quite a few that will. I have a cheap (£37.49) akura DVD player that will play mp3's on DVD media no problems at all. And if you look at the DVD player compatability list you will see that there are 487 players listed that will play DVDMP3.

In terms of superextended playback time, nothing beats having 4GB of mp3s, but since not all dvd players can support it, you can try the method below (do a search in this forum).

You have the option of keeping the music as PCM (non-lossy) for about 6 hours of music, or compressing the music into stereo AC-3 for maybe three to four times the playing time.

For PCM storage that will play on any dvd player that can read recorded DVDs: The simplest way is to use Sony DVD Architect. Supply it with your wav files or other content, and it will transcode the files to any bitrate from 16-bit 48kHz to 24-bit 96kHz. You can specify picture files to accompany each track, and have a menu structure to organize the music with.

Ditto for Ac-3 compressed audio on dvdr.

    Hope this info helps!
