Hey all, pretty soon I am planning to work on building a better computer system for my video needs....I have the MSI 865PE Neo2-LS i865PE 800FSB motherboard and the case, but still have alot of other components to go before I can get it completed. My question is....can you use the SATA hard drives with the normal IDE hard drives? Since the price of the SATA drives arent that bad, I thought of getting one also to add to the existing 2 drives for video processing. As fast as these drives are i figure it would be a good alternative to the SCSI drives which are too expensive, and good chance they wont drop frames. Id figure when i get my tax check i can start working on getting the other components. Im also planning to go with a gig of RAM also, is there any advantage to dual-channel memory? Any help would be appreciated.

  2. You can use ATA Parallel drives on Serial ATA controllers, but you will need something like this ...

    Here's one at NewEgg: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-999-704&depa=1

  3. I've got a Promise (SuperTrak) 6-channel ATA Raid controller. That's right, up to 6 drives! Of course, one must be a swap drive. Still 600+ Gb of partition space!! Using the 7200 rpm (or higher?) IDE drives currently available (don't forget 8mb cache or better) - you can have a relatively cheap array up in a matter of months. I would recommend Promise - however watch out if you use linux. These (Promise) controllers aren't very friendly with some linux dist. Good luck!

Ive heard that Promise had some good products. And yes, I only use the 7200RPM drives since they are faster than the older 5400 models. And im not familiar with Linux, so I wont have that problem to worry about..lol. Wow, with 600+GB of video, you could run a 24 hour TV program right on your computer! 8)

  5. It's sweet! Just make sure you use NFTS (XP) so you won't be limited by that whole FAT (4Gb) file size limitations. Plenty space for any capturing scenario. Now I just need a good camera with fireware capabilities! Ciao!!
