Hey everyone. I was trying to make a backup of my Superman DVD using Doom9's Big 3 Guide but everytime I run DoItFast4U it tells me that duplicate VOB IDs have been found. I've read the quick guide on them but I still don't understand how to fix this problem. What ends up happening is after HOURS of encoding this movie the final step to 'finalize' the dvd back together fails. Any help with this issue would be appreciated. Oh, and if anyone has backed up this DVD using Shrink or IC8 how does it look? I don't know how to see what the bitrate of the movie is so I don't know how it would look in terms of artifacts. Thanks guys.

There are two methods to backup DVDs with duplicate vob-ids. The simplest to understand, though probably the hardest to actually do, is to manually reuse the vob-ids as necessary when authoring. Yes, this means you will have to manually re-author, Reauthorist is not going to do this for you as far as I know. You just have to rebuild the vob as it is displayed in the IFO. You may want to look at some of your other Reauthorist created layouts to see what such a disk might look like. Basically, look through the IFO and find how many titles there are. Create the same number of titles in your VTS on the scenario editor. Then see how many pgs are under each title, and find those in your assets list. Just drag and drop the items onto the title in the right order. When you find that you are missing an asset for a PGC or for a cell or whatever, look at it in the ifo and see what vob-id it uses. Then look for that vob-id elsewhere and it will be located in one of the other assets that you encoded. Just isolate that vobid, cell whatever, and drag and drop it in this new location. Basically you will be using that same asset multiple times. Rebuild the whole layout and then compile. I don't know any better way to explain it. It sounds complicated but once you learn the heirachy of DVDS (its only 5 little tiers) its really actually simple and can be done in a matter of seconds.
Ok the second method is a little hard to understand the concept, but the process is so damn easy its almost scary. IFOUpdate has a feature called adjusted cell mode (acm.) What you do is load the IFO into it and then do file/view it graphically (something to that effect.) it gives you a long table of information, but basically just follow the right tower. Look at the vob-ids and see what order they go in from top to bottom. Now match these up with the IFO. Luckily, most DVDs are very straightforward, and everything is in order. So what you do, is create a single VTS and a single title in Scenarist. Then you simply drag and drop the cells in the order they are listed in IFOUpdate. If you are lucky, all you have to do is drop the one PGC you encoded, even if there are hundreds of reused vobs. Just make sure the cells are added in the right order, and that's it. Compile and complete the usual process but set IFOUpdate to acm mode instead and it will make all the correct links. It will essentially cheat and allow you to skip the process of having to make the vob file match that of the original, as long as the cells are in teh right order than it essentially does all the authoring for you.
Finally, I know this looks like I'm speaking Greek. This is not something that you can explain, you just have to do it. But luckily for you, there is a new program coming out very soon (maybe out already) called Scenaid which does pretty much what Reauthorist does but, among other things, also works with reused vob-id DVDs. So basically once you get this program it pretty much is about a 2 button process again. If this stuff seems too daunting you might want to just wait for Scenaid's final release. -
Wow, that's a lot. I appreciate the nice explanation. I'll have to give that a try. I am sure it just takes practice. I like using CCE to encode the backups simply because the overall quality looks a heck of a lot better. Thanks again man. I appreciate it!

Okay, I have another question. Do I attempt to reuse the VOB IDs prior to or after I use Reauthorist (do I encode before I do this or after)? Thanks for the help.
