I got a stupid question but what is lean red meat ?
I never bought meat in my life and I have no idea what it is.

  2. i think i'm right about this..

lean meat is the meat that has had the fat cut off of it.. and red meat is the good parts of the cow.. 1 + 1 = 2, = lean red meat.

i could be wrong.. when i buy groceries i just get meat the looks good.. porkchops, chicken, cow, fish, and i mash it all together and make a multianimal stew.

  3. I believe lean red meat is just meat from the cow(beef) that is over 95% fat free. It usually just means that it is a leaner cut or less fatty cut. But in order for it to be lean, I would suggest 95% fat free or more.

Look on the labels. They usually tell you the fat free percentage. Or you can always just ask someone behind the meat counter. They will usually give you a good choice of meat.

    Good Luck

It's the meat that doesn't taste as good as the rest.

TGPO has the best answer. A nicely marbled steak, with streaks of fat running through it is the best, flavorwise.

Lean red meats are cuts such as round steak, eye of round, most sirloin steak and roasts, flank or skirt steak, from down along the side of the cow, no fat at all.

They are also the toughest cuts, and if you get a tender sirloin in a restaurant, you can almost bet it has been soaking in a meat tenderizer, particlarly if you do bite into any fat that might be clinging to it. Horrible tooth and mouth feel, bad taste.

Check out the Atkins people, and news reports on successes with a high fat, meat diet. Not just them, get some news from parties with no axe to grind. Lower cholesterol, overall, higher "good" cholesterol, lower "bad" cholesterol.

I'm not saying do the diet, I am saying that if you eat some more fatty meats, you will probably feel satisfied sooner and not eat so many of the accompaniments as to get fat, or fatter.

Why have you not ever bought any meat. Veggie, or recently split up and have to do it yourself, and a little lost? My sympathy, either way And hope you don't have a heart attack when you see what the prices have gone up to over the last year. Damn near cheaper to go buy a hamburger than to buy ground meat to make your own. Mad cow, doncha know.

    Cheers,

    George

George, I've seen you say that before, and I'm in shock. I've never known anyone to want to eat the fat. It's so slimy...

Ah, to each their own. More for you I guess. :P

Though I do like steak medium or medium rare. Needs to have some pink or red in there. Keep it good and juicy.

    Ditto.
    No other way for me.

I was out all day yesterday (motorways.......freeways to the 10% of you) and the only place I could find to eat was a McDonalds.
First time in over two years
    I'm sorry

    Will,

    You don't have to apologize.

    Lordsmurf,

If it has no fat, the best part, it's not worth eating. When my kids and I would have prime rib, a couple would cut the big chunk of fat in the center and put it on my plate, and I would savor the hell out of it.

My own steaks have to be runny red, cool to the touch, known as rare, warm center is med. rare. I have had waitresses, in GOOD eating places come over several times and ask me if I was SURE I didn't want them to take it back to be cooked a little more. I'd just growl at them and hunker over it protectively, and mutter "Go 'way".

Kinda like "Run the cow through here, and I'll take a bite as it passes".

Hey, they say you can't cook "Mad Cow" prions, and e-coli is surface bacteria, only multiplies in ground beef, so when you grill a steak, you've burnt to death the e-coli. No other disease I know you can get from solid beef.

You don't eat the fat? Shame on you!!!

    Cheers,

    George

I like my steaks medium rare, with no fat. That would just make me hurl.

Thanks for the replies. I don't buy meat cause I am still in high school and live with my parents . I want to change the way I eat, I need more protein in my diet and I read that lean red meat has a lot of protein.
