I have some interviews I want to burn on DVD, but I have been running into a problem as they are both telecined and interlaced. They are strictly interlaced when the person is on the screen being interviewed. However, it becomes telecined when they switch to a movie clip that they are talking about? To make things worse, the switch from interlaced footage to telecined footage is done with a fade from one to the other.
In my reading, I have found that it is best to leave strictly interlaced footage interlaced and leave the framerate at 29.97. Will this be a problem if I try to watch this on a 16:9 HDTV? Do HDTV's do some kind of deinterlacing?
Thanks.

You need to be clearer on what you are asking. Specifically, you are confusing interlacing and telecining. All video displayed on a non-HD TV from a DVD is interlaced. Some is hard telecined.
I suspect that you are talking about true 29.97fps material with film parts (24fps) thrown in. But I can only guess...ICBM target coordinates:

Leave it 29.97 fps and interlaced. You won't have any issues with HDTV, they deal with interlacing just fine.
The 16:9 is anotehr issue, but I doubt your source is true 16:9, leave it 4:3 if it is.To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
If it is true 29.97, then you don't WANT to IVTC it. Just go like Gaz suggested and encode as interlaced.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I'm glad I can just leave it as it is by encoding it at 29.97 fps interlace. I'm also leaving it 4:3. I did convert the films from 4:3 to 16:9 and they played fine on a 16:9 TV as well as my 4:3 one. I had no problem with them since they were 29.97 fps telecined. These extras like the interviews and stuff have really been a pain though.
Thanks again for the help. Now I can get back to encoding them with no worries.
