when you click open disk with dvd shrink it goes through a little process were it reads the disk and then lets you choose what you want to keep or compress. suppose after you open the disk and you dont want to do anything further....just close the program...for whatever reason. does anything get saved on the computer? the reason i ask is because i'm just starting to play around with all of this stuff and i opend a disk for the first time today. it took about 30sec or so to collect all of the disk info. i wasn't ready to copy anything yet so i just hit the X to closet the program. later on i went back to open the disk again and it did it immediatly...no wait at all....as if all of the info was already on the computer. this was all after having taken the disk out and had the computer off. i'm wondering y it would have taken some time to get the disk info the first time, but did it so quickly the second time.

I think it just already has the code recognized so it doesnt need to read it. And it says next time u open the same dvd it doesnt need to analyze again
Go to http://www.expage.com/howtocopydvds4free it Rocks! -
samdha14 is correct....for every dvd that has been analized it will only do that ONCE. no worries, because if you ever put that same disk in again...you just wont have to go through the analizing again.
If at first you don't succeed; call it version 1.0 -
ok...thanks for the info.... i was just worried that it was saving the whole dvd somewhere on the computer and i was gonna run out of disk space.
thanks again. i'm gonna try to makd my first copy later on tonight with nero 6. i'm going to use the dvd rw that came with my wrigher... this way if i screw something up i wont have a coaster. -
If you do a File Find for 'Analysis Results' this will show you where DVD Shrink will save the files it uses, it is only a small file between a few k and a few hundred k. On Win98 they are stored in C:\Windows\Application Data\.

When Shrink actually rips and saves the files...it takes anywhere from 20-50 minutes on most systems. The analysing it does takes only about a minute and a half on my puter. That's how u can tell the difference.
-
Like they said above....it analyses it once on the initial opening of the disk but not on the next time you do it.
Sorry to thread jack but do you all use the deep analyze option on shrink? I do and it takes about 30 minutes on a nforce2 with AMDXP2k+ on a seperate harddrive then the OS install. Also, when using Shrink 3.0beta5, after I have used DVDdecrypter, I go to open the files and Shrink gives me an error saying the file cannot be found when I can see it in the folder. Any one have a solution? I will try the updated version in the next week or so. -
Don't feel bad, lotsa folks make that same mistake. If u intend to process/compress with shrink after ripping with decrypter, you have to rip in FILE mode. Unlike with DVD2One, shrink doesn't recognize the .ifo file created when doing an IFO rip.
I haven't tried using the new shrink 3.1 yet to see if it will process IFO rips, so this info applies to the beta 5 release.
I've only done the deep analysis in shrink beta 5 once, and that was on a full disc copy I made of Bruce Almighty. I wasn't around my puter as it processed so I have no idea how long it took exactly. I just know the whole compression/deep analysis process was completed within an hour & fifteen minutes. The DVD came out perfect.
Hope this helps. -
Well actually, after reviewing DVDShrink 3.1 (And its newer release, 3.1.1) I have noticed some very GOOD additions that no one else seems to have commented on yet.
First and foremost, you are correct. (All of you). DVD Shrink saves the individual disc information to the harddrive to save you time in the future.
HOWEVER, this is the neglected / unrecognized part that hasn't been mentioned. I'm not sure if this is a temporary thing, but here is an example. I was ripping "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" Extended Edition to my harddrive, with DVD Shrink 3.1 in re-author mode, with movie only. I had it set to play the film rating (PG-13) screen, then the New Line Cinema opening screen, then the actual movie itself, and then the 'menu' that tells you to continue over to disc 2.
Well, I got it to stay at 96% (after unchecking all audio streams except DD 5.1, and removing all subtitles except English) and decided to do a Deep Analysis ANYWAYS, just for the hell of it, so that instead of looking like 96%, it would look like 98%. (Don' ask, I'm extremely picky about video quality, and slightly excentric to boot.)
Back to my post. I Deep Analyzed it, then encoded. However, I didnt like the new line logo playing before the movie, so I deleted it from my harddrive. I re-organized everything the same way as before, and set it to back-up, and DVD Shrink REMEMBERED that I had deep analyzed it before, so it skipped that part immediately. (It went from 1% all the way to 100% in less then 1 second.) I also tried this on Pirates of the Carribbean, as well as Scarface. Guess what? DVD Shrink remembered!
After a long and somewhat useless post, just thought it was a useful / noteable thing to mention, especially regarding this program. Anyways, gotta go finish up converting, but feel free to test it out. It's not going to hurt any to see for yourself.
Later.

Hey thanks for the info, I was having trouble again with backing up my folks DVD's for them(grandchildren, blessing and a curse)and then read the replys so that helped me out, thank you.
I was just about to install 3.1 when I saw that 3.1.1 was released, guess I will go with that one. I like that it 'remembers' the deep analysis, that is a big time saver, especially when I edit some movies to make them more family friendly.
Again thanks for the help.
